About The Position

The Pharmacy Medication Technician assists with the accurate and complete collection of medication history data in a variety of hospital settings. This role prioritizes the process of obtaining an accurate and complete medication list upon hospital admission to ensure patient safety.

Credential:PHARM TECH: Pharmacy Technician Licensure
Equivalent Experience: New hires and transfers before October 1, 2015 must possess a full technician license or limited pharmacy license through the state of Michigan. Effective October 1, 2015, all incumbents, new hires and transfers to this position must possess a pharmacy technician temporary, limited, or full license through the state of Michigan. Individuals with a temporary license must obtain a full license through the state of Michigan within 365 days of obtaining the temporary license.
Education: HIGH
Equivalent Experience:
Education Specialization: GENSTUDY
One or more years of experience as a pharmacy technician (retail preferred) or allied health professional, with knowledge of medications including brand/generic names, available dosages, frequencies, and indications.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with people of diverse backgrounds and at all levels within the medical center and in the community.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
Ability to create and foster a cooperative teamwork environment.

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.

Responsibilities

Obtains an accurate and complete admission medication list via a face-to-face interview with patients to include prescription, over the counter, and herbal products noting drug name, dose, frequency, compliance, and last dose taken. This may require collaboration with alternative information sources such as family, physician office, nursing home, or retail pharmacy.
Communicates effectively and uses advanced interviewing skills to conduct the medication history interview with patients in a manner that is professional and non-invasive.
Problem solves and applies critical thinking skills in obtaining admission medications lists for a wide variety of patient populations.
Applies advanced computer skills to gather information and document the patient’s admission medication list.
Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety, and medical information.
Obtains and documents any known drug allergies and reactions.
Seeks to identify process problems and utilizes problem-solving to produce a positive outcome.
Performs duties in a cost-effective manner, striving to avoid wasting resources.
This includes using time at work in a productive manner, providing/implementing suggestions, and documenting activities that conserve resources (financial and human).
Maintains job-related skills and educational development and assists in the education of other team members.
Supports and abides by all MyMichigan Health policies and procedures.

Assists with training of new associates and performs special projects as needed.
Able to perform all Pharmacy Technician duties and responsibilities if physically staffing in the inpatient pharmacy.
