About The Position

The Pharmacy Manager is responsible for supporting the VP of Operations in managing pharmacy operations. This includes implementation and enforcement of policies and procedures, supervision and training of staff, inventory management, quality assurance and regulatory compliance. As a member of the Brooks leadership team, the Pharmacy Manager supports and facilitates an interdisciplinary team approach to the delivery of care. This includes a pharmacy environment in which collaboration is valued and excellence in clinical care, education, and research is promoted and achieved and evidence-based pharmacy practice is facilitated. Demonstrates a commitment to create a nursing culture to achieve higher quality indicators, elevate pharmacy services, clinical outcomes and patient care delivery systems.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years as a Pharmacy Clinical/Operation Specialist or 5 years of hospital pharmacy experience.
  • Arizona Pharmacy Consultant Certification required.
  • Must have Pharmacy leadership experience.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately enters medication orders on the computerized pharmacy profile.
  • Reviews patient profile for allergy, drug-drug, drug-food, drug disease interactions, duplicate therapy.
  • Validates that all medication for patients of all ages is filled with the proper drug, dosage form, strength and quantity.
  • Contracts and confers with physician if there are any questions or clarifications needed in the processing or monitoring of drug therapy.
  • Identifies interventions on the computerized pharmacy profile.
  • Evaluates laboratory and microbiology data to ensure appropriate age-specific response to medications.
  • Compounds or supervises the preparation of IV admixtures, epidural pain, TPN and chemotherapy as required following aseptic technique and recommended safety precautions.
  • Ensures documentation of care is carried out as per department policies and procedures.
  • Recognizes, reports, documents and seeks appropriate intervention for signs and symptoms of adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, or medication allergies.
  • Consults with physicians and nursing staff members concerning the availability, dosage form, side effect and possible incompatibility of new as well as currently used drugs.
  • Recommends formulary alternatives to prescribing physicians.
  • Supports and participates in the goals of the organization's quality improvement, risk management and patient safety program.
  • Develops and documents staff competency on an ongoing basis and develops improvement plans when deficiencies are identified.
  • Effectively and proactively intervenes in conflicts between pharmacy and medical staff regarding drug therapy issue resolutions.
  • Works with the VP of Operations and IRF Pharmacy managers to identify and develop processes to meet or exceed all controlled substance diversion prevention and monitoring standards.
  • Participates in controlled substance reviews and audits.
  • Participates in the maintenance of pharmacy dictionaries including adding new drugs to the drug dictionary and Gold Standard formulary Charge Master Maintenance.
  • Participates in the education and reconciliation for admission and discharge medication reconciliations.
  • Provides oversight and is responsible for activities of the Pharmacy.
  • Guides Pharmacy practice and development to include the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of the professional practice model, pharmacy education, quality improvement and infection prevention.
  • Represents Brooks in the community, state and region of pharmacy leaders.
  • Participates in planning of physical facilities and utilization of space that affect management of the Pharmacy Practice.
  • Ensures a staffing system based upon patient and family needs, and types and preparation of workers for the in-patient hospital.
  • Designs and recommends hospital-wide Pharmacy staffing standards.
  • Plans for the utilization of personnel for maximum efficiency and quality of patient care.
  • Oversees the management of all central, hospital wide Pharmacy functions, including PRN pool.
  • Maintains up-to-date job descriptions and performance evaluation criteria that define requirements, competencies, responsibilities and functions of the positions.
  • Collaborates with leadership in developing budgets.
  • Participates in intra- and inter-departmental planning for improvement of patient care.
  • Oversees standards of safe pharmacy practice.
  • Collaborates with programs in implementing recommended standards of safe and effective pharmacy practice.
  • Interviews, verifies credentials and selects personnel for central Pharmacy positions.
  • Collaborates with hospital leaders in the selection of staff for key program pharmacy positions.
  • Promotes, transfers and terminates pharmacy employees.
  • Performs other functions related to this classification of job as assigned by the affiliated the VP of Operations.
  • Consistently strives to understand, anticipate and meet the needs, expectations and satisfaction levels of patients and other customers.
  • Supports a culture of safety and transparency to bring errors, inefficiencies and inaccuracies and potential solutions to the attention of Senior leaders.
  • Works with the VP Operations to develop innovative solutions to departmental problems.
  • Identifies and implements methods of controlling costs or generating revenue while providing maximum value to both patients and hospital.
  • Maximizes efficiency in all departmental operations and measures progress against quality goals.
