About The Position

The Pharmacy Intern performs technical (non-judgmental) functions related to drug preparation, distribution, and charge control for inpatients, outpatients, and associates, adhering to standards set by the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists. The role requires familiarity with drug purchasing, inventory control, and institutional drug distribution systems, including ensuring medications and supplies are in-date, properly stored, clean, and orderly. The intern will assist the Pharmacist with ordering and receiving IV fluids and supplies, complete and document cleanings of the IV suite and hoods according to USP 797 Guidelines and institutional policies. Additionally, the intern will handle essential functions related to dispensing prescriptions for associates, strictly comply with all HIPAA laws and guidelines, and perform other duties as outlined and/or allowed by the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy. All dispensing and/or compounding of medications by the Pharmacy Intern must be checked by a Pharmacist.

Requirements

  • A high school education or equivalent.
  • Enrolled in an accredited School of Pharmacy.
  • Current Pharmacy Intern License in good standing in the state of Arkansas.
  • Meet all requirements set forth by the State Health Department and the State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Mathematical proficiency required to accurately and efficiently complete calculations required for the usual dosage determinations and solutions preparation.
  • Computer skills.
  • Basic record keeping skills.
  • Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and understanding of the healthcare institution and its pharmacy department.
  • Have thorough knowledge and understanding of the duties and responsibilities of his/her position, including standards of ethics governing pharmacy practice.
  • Have working knowledge of drug dosages, rules of administration and dosage forms.
  • Have knowledge of the procedures and operations relating to the packaging and labeling of drug products.
  • Have knowledge of the procedures and operations relating to aseptic compounding and parenteral admixture operations.
  • Have the numerical ability to detect errors and accuracy in compiling records and calculating charges.
  • Have a working knowledge of the pharmaceutical medical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in the prescribing, dispensing and charting of medications in the institution.

Responsibilities

  • Be familiar with the essential intern functions associated with the dispensing of prescriptions for associates.
  • Strictly comply with all HIPAA laws and guidelines.
  • Abide by the legal requirement that all dispensing and/or compounding of medications by a Pharmacy Intern must be checked by a Pharmacist.
  • Perform all other duties as outlined and/or allowed by the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy.
