About The Position

The director of pharmacy plans, organizes, controls, and supervises activities in hospital pharmacy according to hospital policies, standards of practice of the profession, and State and Federal laws. Recommends innovations in the practice and function of the hospital pharmacy to Administration and carries out mutually agreed upon programs and corporate initiatives. In addition the director of pharmacy should provide support, mentoring, and oversight of the activities of the clinical pharmacists and supportive personnel on staff. Function in accordance with standard written policy & procedures, guidelines, and state and federal regulations Communicate with other pharmacy team members, caregivers, providers, and ancillary departments in an effective and positive manner. Demonstrate emotional control and intelligence in managing work relationships. Attend and actively participate in team huddles and meetings. Answer phones in a professional and pleasant manner. Ensure that the department is in compliance with JCAHO requirements, Drug Enforcement Administration, State Board of Pharmacy, USP 797/800/795, hospital policies and procedures, and other Federal and State regulations. Ensure that the department is in compliance with all applicable safety and security practices, infection control policies, fire and safety, and disaster planning. Establish quality improvement, fiscal, productivity, and patient satisfaction goals and objectives in conjunction with upper management and corporate leadership. Responsible for department planning, goals, and objectives that are consistent with the Hospital and Pharmacy. Service and communicate these goals and objectives to the team. Provide leadership to the department through effective organization, direction of activities, and appropriate delegation of functions. Responsible for development, implementation, and regular review/maintenance of Department specific policy and procedures. Responsible for the effective recruitment, selection, orientation, training, promotion, evaluation, retention and termination of department employees. Routinely assess departmental education needs and provide the appropriate learning experiences, (on the job training, workshop, in services, etc.). Determine and document the competence of department employees. Establish job performance standards, functions, responsibilities, and the qualifications of department employees and provides insightful and timely feedback and evaluations as appropriate. Direct the activities of and provide professional and technical guidance to pharmacy personnel. Communicate the Hospital Mission and Philosophy to department employees and integrates with departmental operations. Maintain appropriate controls of department functions to insure smooth, effective operations. Promote teamwork among staff, peers, physicians, nurses, and others. Promote multi-disciplinary teamwork in order to meet the organization’s goals and objectives. Supervise the maintenance and dissemination of drug information through in-service education of hospital personnel, consultation with patients, hospital staff, and medical staff. Anticipate the needs and issues of customers/suppliers in order to insure effective departmental operations and/or meet their needs. Continuously evaluate the quality of services and/or products provided to the department’s customers. Monitor and assist with the collection, documentation, and reporting of quality assessment and improvement data. Provide leadership to new program development, implementation and evaluation, and act as a consultant in areas of expertise. Actively participate in Hospital committees, task forces, projects, and provides leadership as assigned. Represent Hospital and Pharmacy Shared Services through active participation in outside activities and organizations. Maintain professional competency sufficient to meet current and future needs of the facility. Interpret orders and transcribe or verify them accurately and efficiently into the pharmacy computer system. Accurately compound and dispense pharmaceuticals. Monitor drug therapy regimens for contraindications, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, allergies and appropriateness of drug and dose. Provide accurate and timely medication information to healthcare staff and patients. Document all clinical activities and interventions accurately and completely. Sustain the hospital formulary, minimizing non-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic interchanges and promote rational drug therapy selection. Supervise and assist pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other support staff effectively. Prioritize work and lead others to comply with facility medication turn-around time policy and procedure and identify areas for improved efficiency.

Requirements

  • B.S. or Pharm D. from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy.
  • 3+ year’s hospital pharmacy experience with 2+ year’s supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Active Pharmacist license in good standing with the appropriate State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Other applicable state requirements – i.e., sterile compounding, etc.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in the legal responsibilities of the pharmacist to the facility and all state and federal laws and regulations governing pharmacy services.
  • Experience working in Microsoft Office applications and Electronic Medical Record Systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctor of Pharmacy from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy.
  • 5+ year’s hospital pharmacy experience.
  • ALS/ACLS certification. (Required if attending Code Blue).
