About The Position

JOB SUMMARY: Miller County Hospital pharmacy has a hospital and retail pharmacy license to serve both our 25 bed Critical Access Hospital, two nursing homes and employee prescriptions. One nursing home has a ventilator unit requires extensive clinical services. The Pharmacist interprets orders and transcribes or verifies them accurately and efficiently into the pharmacy computer system. They accurately compound and dispense pharmaceuticals. The Pharmacist will monitor drug therapy regimens for contraindications, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, allergies and appropriateness of drug and dose. They suggest appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic medication alternatives to medical staff. Assists with clinical services such as drug consults, nutrition support, pharmacokinetics, anticoagulant monitoring, pain management, IV to PO, renal dosing, antibiotic stewardship and other programs as defined by Pharmacy Leadership. They will comply with facility policy, procedures, and regulatory requirements. The Pharmacist oversees technicians and the daily pharmacy operation. The pharmacist checks that prescriptions filled for employees and nursing home residents are filled accurately and in a timely manner. The pharmacist works well with the hospital and nursing homes to provide the best pharmaceutical support possible.

Requirements

  • Ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong written and verbal skills.
  • Basic Computer Skills
  • Have near normal hearing: Hear alarms/telephone/normal speaking voice.
  • Have near normal vision: Clarity of vision (both near and far), ability to distinguish colors.
  • Have good manual dexterity.
  • Have good eye-hand foot coordination.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks/motion.
  • B.S. or PharmD from an ACPE-accredited school of Pharmacy.
  • Active pharmacist license in good standing with the appropriate State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Automated pharmacy systems, typewriters, IV Laminar Flow Hood or the willingness to learn.

  • Minimum of one year of hospital experience is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Interprets orders and transcribes or verifies them accurately and efficiently into the pharmacy computer system.
  • Accurately compound and dispense pharmaceuticals.
  • Monitor drug therapy regimens for contraindications, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, allergies and appropriateness of drug and dose.
  • Suggest appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic medication alternatives to medical staff.
  • Assists with clinical services such as drug consults, nutrition support, pharmacokinetics, anticoagulant monitoring, pain management, IV to PO, renal dosing, antibiotic stewardship and other programs as defined by Pharmacy Leadership.
  • Comply with facility policy, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversees technicians and the daily pharmacy operation.
  • Checks that prescriptions filled for employees and nursing home residents are filled accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Reviews prescriptions issued by physicians or other authorized prescribers to assure accuracy and determines formulas and ingredients needed.
  • Compounds medications using standard formulas and processes such as weighing, measuring and mixing ingredients.
  • Monitors all posting onto the patient profiles in order that accuracy, drug allergies, drug interactions, duplicate therapy, rational drug therapy and incompatibilities may be realized and better patient care received.
  • Checks patient medication cassettes prior to delivery to patient care areas to ascertain that the correct drug, dosage form, schedule and strength is being dispensed.
  • Assists in filling prescriptions.
  • Processes records of medications and supplies dispensed to patients or customers, computes charges and either enters them into the computer of forwards them to Data Processing.
  • Aids in the training of Pharmacy Technician students or new employees.
  • Prepares select reports and MARs.
  • Receives and stores incoming deliveries of medication and supplies.
  • Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement and CQI activities.
  • Assists the pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care for patients ranging in age from newborn to the elderly.
  • Maintains the Pharmaceutical Services Department in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Performs other pharmacy-related duties as requested or required.
  • Demonstrates ability to calculate figures and amounts relating to dosage calculations when filling various prescriptions ranging from the newborn to the elderly populations.
  • Demonstrates ability to apply common sense and understand to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral and diagram form.
  • Demonstrates ability to deal with problems involving several variables in particular situations.
  • Recognizes inappropriate dosing based in available dosage forms for various age groups.
  • Performs assigned quality control activities on schedule.
  • Performs assigned training activities successfully.
  • Maintains professional, helpful and courteous relationship within the department and with other departments.
