About The Position

General Summary: Responsible in the operations Pharmacy Department, providing clinical resources to patients and staff and inventory of the pharmacy. Assures infusion pharmacy products quality and compliance with pharmacy standards. Supervises technicians in the preparation of sterile IV administration, and daily maintenance of pharmacy. Provides clinical pharmacy services though drug information, billing assistance, patient education, and to the professional staff. Processes, enters and interprets physician orders, and mixes complex sterile (including cytotoxic) products, using aseptic technique. Dispense prescription drugs to patients and assist in the preparation and charging of medications and supplies under the supervision of the pharmacist in charge.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Pharmacy, graduated from program
  • State licensure as Pharmacy Intern (valid with State of Michigan from graduation from school of pharmacy until licensure as Pharmacist, expiration of intern license, or one year from graduation, whichever is earliest)
  • Must have a high degree of organizational skills as well as computer and applications skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively and pleasantly with a diverse population.
  • Ability to review detailed data and make prompt judgments based on that data.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively under tight deadlines, interruptions and high work volume.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Oncology and supportive therapies and/or drug research is desired
  • Retail pharmacy, claim reconciliation or accounting background helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Input customer and prescription data into pharmacy computer system. Create prescription labels, accurately retrieve medication for dispensing, and place medication into prescription containers, done under supervision of pharmacist and in accordance with local and federal law.
  • Ensure excellent customer service in the Retail Pharmacy department.
  • Ensure claims are properly filed in the QS-1 NRx environment. Enter customer purchases into Point-of- Sale system.
  • Accept telephone prescriptions and refills from physician offices as well as written prescriptions from patients. Complete paperwork related to filling prescriptions.
  • Handle telephone inquiries, and assist in resolving issues and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Using aseptic technique, accurately prepares Compounded Sterile Products (CSP), including chemotherapeutic medications.
  • Insures the safety of all patients and personnel by following CHC protocols and NIOSH/OSHA guidelines for preparation, delivery, and disposal of potentially cytotoxic agents.
  • Inventory control and accurate handling of pharmaceuticals, packing slips and invoices.
  • Check physician infusion orders for appropriateness and completeness based on knowledge of protocols, regimens and patient history. Review original orders or initiate review of original orders by RN if orders are inappropriate or incomplete Precisely charges and credits patients, nursing units, and other facilities for medications dispensed from Pharmacy. Monitors and maintains drug (including controlled substances), research, assistance inventories and associated logs.
  • Supervise infusion technician preparation of infusion medications and solutions assuring use of appropriate and safe technique, accurate selection of ingredients, and inspection of product before dispensing for treatment in clinic.
  • Completes expected competencies as defined by CHCWM HR and Department of Pharmacy. Measurement occurs annually. [OPIN 3-1]. Function as a team member by expanding his/her responsibilities as directed by management to facilitate optimal workflow within the cancer center. Communicates and interacts with peers and other departments in a manner that is viewed as having a positive effect on patient services and CHC staff morale. Interacts effectively with patients/family members and demonstrates sensitivity in regards to cultural diversity, age specific needs and confidentiality.
