A clinical specialist is able to perform all tasks of a clinical pharmacy and clinical pharmacy specialist. Additionally, pharmacists in the Pharmacy Specialty job code are responsible for developing a practice in their area of specialty, including a strong relationship with the associated nursing unit(s)/department(s). Specialty pharmacists are expected to identify, implement, and monitor projects and programs proactively; participate in the hospital’s MUE program; precept residents and students; and otherwise further the hospital’s mission of serving its patients and becoming nationally recognized for clinical and service excellence. Requirements include a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and residency training (or demonstrated equivalent clinical experience). Excellent communication, organization, self-direction, and prioritization skills are required.
