The Pharmacist will coordinate the drug distribution and clinical pharmacy activities for nursing and support departments within the hospital. This role is responsible for ensuring safe and efficient methods for coordinating established pharmacy policies concerning drug patient care. The Pharmacist will provide clinical drug information to meet the needs of patients, nurses, and physicians.

  • Reviews and interprets physicians' orders for appropriateness, ensuring that overdoses/under doses have not been prescribed and that interactions, incompatibilities, or toxic compounds will not result from medication combinations.
  • Dispenses prescriptions to outpatients in accordance with hospital policy and regulations, counseling patients about their medications and maintaining an accurate patient profile.
  • Maintains necessary controls with respect to audited controlled drugs/alcohol and prepares controlled drug requests for delivery by a technician.
  • Supervises pre-packing of drugs and control procedures.
  • Provides drug information such as dosing, compatibilities, and formulary substitutes to nursing, physicians, and other healthcare practitioners.
  • Prepares specialized solutions for intravenous administration and ensures stability and sterility for patient consumption.
  • Participates in in-service education programs when requested.
  • Arranges to obtain drugs in emergency situations.
  • Maintains positive interactions with assigned nursing units, monitors activity, evaluates floor stock supply, and assures appropriate medication storage.
  • Verifies the work performed by supportive personnel, including patient drug data entry and unit-dose drug distribution.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the profession through participation in organization memberships and continuing education.
  • Participates in clinical programs such as drug level monitoring and pharmacokinetic consults, communicating with the Coordinator - Clinical Pharmacy Services as necessary.
  • Assures that the quality of professional services is maintained.
  • Must be a Licensed Registered Pharmacist.
  • Minimum six (6) months experience as a Pharmacist.
  • Ability to function independently and possess flexibility and personal integrity.
  • Ability to work effectively with residents, staff, and support agencies.
  • Ability to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile individuals.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant.
  • Ability to enter and retrieve data using computer systems and office equipment.
  • Acute care experience desired.
