About The Position

The Lead Pharmacist provides leadership for pharmacists and ancillary pharmacy staff while delivering safe, effective, and timely distributive and clinical pharmacy services that meet the individualized needs of patients. Supports departmental operations, regulatory compliance, quality improvement, staff development, and service excellence across assigned pharmacy areas. The Lead Pharmacist Leads and supports pharmacists and ancillary staff to ensure high-quality, patient-centered pharmacy services. Organizes and oversees daily operations of assigned pharmacy areas, including staff scheduling, workload distribution, and resource allocation. Develops coverage plans for planned and unplanned staffing gaps, including weekends, vacations, and unanticipated absences. Assists the Pharmacy Manager with employee management activities, including staff evaluation, coaching, training, and performance support. Assist with new hire interviews and onboarding, as needed. Compiles work statistics and maintains required records in accordance with Carilion and departmental policies. Ensures compliance with all applicable federal and state statutes, laws, regulations, standards, and policies governing pharmacy practice. Assists the Pharmacy Manager in maintaining departmental and facility readiness for regulatory surveys, including State, Federal, and Joint Commission requirements. Plans, conducts, analyzes, and reports departmental quality improvement, performance improvement, and research initiatives. Delegates tasks appropriately and monitors performance to ensure regulatory, operational, and service line requirements are met across assigned sites. Provides education and training for pharmacy staff and students, nursing staff and students, medical staff and students, and patients and families. Maintains effective working relationships with pharmacy staff and interdisciplinary teams to promote collaboration, engagement, and high morale. Collaborates with inventory specialists to maintain appropriate inventory levels and ensure medication availability. Provides age-specific pharmaceutical care services across the patient population. Maintains responsibility and accountability for pharmacy operations in compliance with all applicable United States Pharmacopeia chapters, including but not limited to nonsterile compounding, sterile compounding, and hazardous drug handling standards. Provides input and analysis related to budgeting, cost containment, and resource utilization initiatives. Assists the Pharmacy Manager in preparing and managing departmental budgets. Works with medications, devices, and supplies that are high-cost and have significant budgetary impact.

Requirements

  • Education: Graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy; Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy.
  • Experience: 3 years of pharmacy experience required.
  • Licensure Certification: Licensed to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia required.
  • Knowledge of institutional pharmacy practice required, including familiarity with a broad range of pharmaceutical products, dosage forms, indications, and precautions
  • Proficiency with general office equipment, computer systems, and keyboarding required
  • Ability to manage time effectively, work efficiently and accurately, and follow established procedures with minimal supervision required
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills required.
