About The Position

Basic Purpose Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving professional work in the operation of a pharmacy at a state institution or facility. Level Descriptor This is the leadership level of the job family where incumbents are assigned responsibilities involving the overall direction and operation of a pharmacy at a state facility. Responsibilities may include direction or supervision of pharmacy staff, including supervisory staff at satellite pharmacies, making administrative decisions on budget requirements or staff development, serving institutional committees, and recommending formulary changes based on pharmacoeconomics and pharmacotherapeutic data.

Requirements

  • Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a valid license to practice pharmacy in the State of Oklahoma plus four years of experience as a pharmacist; or a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences plus one year of experience as a pharmacist and a valid license to practice pharmacy in the State of Oklahoma or a Master’s degree in Pharmacy Administration for two years of the required experience.
  • Knowledge of prescription drugs and other medications; of procedures for compounding medicines; of controlled substances; of legal requirements concerning the filling and labeling of medications; of procedures for disposition of controlled medications; of the classification of drugs according to their action, use and dosage; of pharmaceutical calculations used in weighting and measuring drugs; of the principles and practices of effective pharmaceutical care and clinical pharmacy including interpretation and evaluation of laboratory and other test results; and of the principles and practices of effective supervision.
  • Ability is required to review and interpret prescriptions; to prepare medications according to physician requirements; to analyze the effects of various combinations of drugs; to establish effective working relationships with others; and to communicate effectively.
  • Some agencies may have determined positions in this job family to be safety sensitive as defined by 63 O.S. § 427.8.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and interprets prescriptions.
  • Compounds and dispenses medications, controlled substances, investigational drugs and samples as ordered by physicians.
  • Reviews and maintains patient profiles for appropriateness of drug therapy, allergies, interactions and side effects.
  • Reviews and verifies technician activities.
  • Consults with physicians as necessary.
  • Assists in investigating reports of adverse drug reactions and the preparation or required reports.
  • Monitors drug supplies and ensures the security of controlled substances.
  • Directs the ordering of new supplies and the disposition of outdated medications as appropriate.
  • Assigns tasks to technicians or clerks assigned to the pharmacy.
  • Ensures on-coming shifts are properly staffed and briefed.
  • Assists in providing in-service training to clerks, technicians, interns, residents and nurses.
  • Maintains records of controlled substances.
  • Ensures compliance with pharmacy policies and procedures.
  • Assists in the preparation of pharmacy reports.
  • Provides drug information for medical personnel at institutions.
  • Makes formulary recommendations.
  • Provides staff of an institution with drug information, data, references, etc.
  • Provides clinical input on institutional committees.
  • Directs or supervises pharmacy staff, including staff at satellite pharmacies.
