About The Position

ASAP North Valley Surgery Center is seeking a detail-oriented, experienced Pharmacist Consultant to oversee and maintain compliance with medication storage, handling, and documentation practices. This consultant will be responsible for regular inspection and evaluation of drug storage areas, controlled substance compliance, emergency cart readiness, and medication safety procedures as guided by state and federal regulations, ISMP standards, and internal protocols.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or equivalent.
  • Active and unrestricted state pharmacist license (state-specific license required).
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in a clinical, hospital, or ambulatory surgery center setting.
  • In-depth knowledge of DEA regulations for controlled substances (CII–CV).
  • Familiarity with ISMP guidelines , Title 21 CFR compliance , and drug inventory best practices .
  • Experience conducting medication audits and inspections.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent documentation skills.
  • Comfortable working independently and communicating findings to management and clinical staff.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience as a consultant pharmacist or compliance auditor .
  • Knowledge of propofol handling policies and anesthesia medication protocols.
  • Experience developing or updating SOPs and regulatory documentation .

Responsibilities

  • Medication Cabinet Management
  • Ensure drug cabinets are clean, well-organized, and properly inventoried.
  • Verify all medications are within expiration and appropriately labeled.
  • Recommend and implement ISMP-recommended "Tall Man Lettering" for look-alike/sound-alike medications.
  • Ensure proper segregation and storage of floor stock and refrigerated medications.
  • Confirm only authorized medications and quantities are maintained on-site.
  • Controlled Substance Compliance
  • Monitor secure, double-locked storage of controlled substances and propofol.
  • Recommend policies to treat propofol as a controlled medication due to abuse potential.
  • Maintain and audit CII–CV log binders and ensure compliance with 21 CFR §§1304.04 and 1304.11.
  • Oversee documentation of daily counts, administered dosages, waste, and inventory additions.
  • Ensure accurate and compliant biennial inventory processes with required documentation.
  • Review and sign off on twice-daily scheduled drug counts with two authorized personnel.
  • Refrigerated Medications
  • Confirm refrigerated medications are stored within the correct temperature range (e.g., 38.8°F).
  • Ensure medications are separated from food and properly labeled.
  • General Medication Management
  • Review and support SOPs for multi-dose vials (e.g., 28-day expiration after opening).
  • Ensure IV solutions, anesthesia, and emergency cart medications are in-date and stored correctly.
  • Recommend and help implement breakaway seals and entry logs for emergency carts.
  • Post metric-apothecary conversion charts in required clinical areas.
  • Ensure up-to-date drug references are readily available to staff.
