About The Position

The position involves training other Package Handlers (PHs) on loading, unloading, palletizing, and scanning techniques to ensure efficient and safe movement of packages through the operation. The role includes the physical loading, unloading, and sorting of packages by hand, which involves lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, and placing packages safely and efficiently. Package Handlers may rotate through various areas and positions such as Loader, Unloader, Palletizer, Scan Weigh and Key (SWAK), Quality Assurance (QA), Facer, and Switcher.

Requirements

• No formal education required.
• No experience required; six months of experience as a PH with FedEx Ground preferred.
• Ability to train multiple peer PHs simultaneously.
• Ability to understand and follow instructions regarding work duties and safety methods.
• Ability to discern numbers and information to sort packages correctly.
• Ability to use basic tools and equipment such as skate wheel rollers, dock carts, hand-held scanners, chutes, and unloading devices.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment.
• PHs operating switching equipment must have a valid driver's license and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) file.

Responsibilities

• Trains new PHs in effective unloading, loading, palletizing, carrying, smalls handling, SWAK, and non-conveyable package handling techniques.
• Provides training to other PHs who need additional instruction on unloading, carrying, loading, palletizing, smalls handling, SWAK, or non-conveyable package handling techniques.
• Provides feedback on proper package handling techniques as needed.
• Reinforces dock safety standards among peer PHs.
• Demonstrates all necessary processes and procedures by example.
• Updates managers on conditions during the sort for operational efficiency decisions.
• Assists in implementing new package handling procedures and techniques.
• Regularly loads/unloads, palletizes, lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls packages while training other PHs.
• Utilizes hand-to-surface methods for all package handling.
• Loads and unloads packages onto or from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor system carts, and load gratings.
• Lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls packages continuously for approximately 3-5 hours per shift, with potential for multiple shifts each day.
• Determines the appropriate conveyor system by scanning packages, reading labels and charts, verifying numbers, and sorting packages accordingly.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
