About The Position
The Switcher position at Federal Express Corporation in Syracuse, New York, is primarily responsible for the movement of trailers to and from the unload/load doors and throughout the yard. This role involves not only the physical loading, unloading, and sorting of packages by hand but also requires the ability to lift, push, pull, carry, and place packages in a safe and efficient manner. The Switcher must perform trailer switches, which include hooking and moving parked trailers from the yard to a load/unload door or vice versa. Communication with management and/or central control is essential to coordinate trailer movements effectively within the yard. In addition to trailer switching, the Switcher is expected to document trailer moves using the Yard Management System or switcher cards. Pre- and post-trip inspections on switcher equipment are also part of the job responsibilities. Safety is a critical aspect of this role, and the Switcher must understand and demonstrate effective yard switching safety processes and procedures. Furthermore, Switchers may be required to perform Package Handler essential functions, which include utilizing “hand-to-surface” methods for all package handling, loading and unloading packages onto or from delivery vehicles, trailers, conveyor system carts, and load gratings. The physical demands of the job include lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling packages on a continuous and repetitive basis for shifts lasting approximately two to four hours. The Switcher must also determine the appropriate conveyor system by scanning packages, reading labels and charts, verifying numbers, and sorting packages accordingly. Overall, the Switcher position is vital to the efficient operation of the yard and requires a combination of physical stamina, attention to detail, and effective communication skills to ensure smooth operations.
