About The Position

SUMMARY: Provide leadership and technical advice for Environment of Care related matters in order to maintain a safe environment and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements. Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities. Directly responsible for Safety Management, Emergency Management and Hazardous Materials/Waste Management. Coordinates and manages risk assessment and risk reduction activities in the physical environment. In collaboration with the Environment of Care (EOC) Committee members, coordinates the annual evaluation of all programs in order to assess their effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement. Collects deficiency information and disseminates summaries of findings, actions and results to leadership. Programs include: Safety Management Security Management Emergency Management Fire Safety Utilities Management Medical Equipment Management Hazardous Materials/Waste Management Implements and coordinates safety management programs as regulated by The Joint Commission (TJC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH), the Department of Environmental Management (DEM), etc. for a safe environment for employees, patients and visitors in accordance with applicable standards and regulations. Works with departments to establish departmental safety policies and serves as a technical resource on all environmental safety related matters. Leads weekly safety/hazard surveillance tours to provide semi-annual reviews for patient care areas and annual reviews for all other areas. Follows up on identified or reported safety problems, concerns or recommendations. Maintains the chemical exposure-monitoring program. Responds to complaints of hazards, odors, indoor air quality, hazardous chemical spills. Investigates opportunities to minimize the amount of hazardous waste generated. Hazardous Waste - Coordinate with the contracted vendor for hazardous waste collection and removal each month, performs weekly hazardous waste shed inspection, maintains manifests & other required documentation, monitors/replaces RCRA bins along with vendor, is a reference for users regarding how to dispose of unknown hazardous items or items and/or consults with contracted vendor. Intervenes when environmental conditions immediately threaten life or health or threaten to damage equipment or buildings. Coordinates implementation of new safety regulations. Acts as the liaison with all regulatory agencies as they relate to environmental safety. Available for consultation or assistance with Brown University Health affiliates Serves as leader for the Environment of Care Committee: Determines agendas Prepares for and chairs meetings Records and distributes minutes Ensures identified action items are followed to completion Emergency Management: Works in alignment with the system-wide Director Emergency Management Serves as Chair of the hospital's Emergency Management Committee, setting agendas, and facilitating meetings and follow-up action items Plans and coordinates required EM drills. Maintain EM inventory of supplies and equipment and ensures ready for use at all times. Maintains documentation, including Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) Responses to Disaster events and coordinates incident command as needed. Plans and coordinates training of staff on various EM scenarios. (evacuation, active shooter). May interact with Community agencies (police, fire, EMS area incident command) Acts as a member of the Biohazards Laboratory Safety Committee and Radiation Safety Committee. Serves as the Chemical Hygiene officer. Generates quarterly Environment of Care Committee report for Leadership. Responsible for the safety portion of Newport Hospital's new employee orientation. Conducts safety-training sessions as requested. Conducts Contractor Safety classes Performs other related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Computer skills with a working knowledge of spreadsheet & spreadsheet programs. Current knowledge of OSHA, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), RIDOH, the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) and TJC requirements required. Professional certifications such as Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), and Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) preferred. Minimum of five years progressive professional experience in safety and or plant operations. Experience in healthcare setting is preferred. Physical Requirements: Must be able to sit/squat 1-3 hours per day, stand and walk 3-7 hours per day, lift 10-35 lbs with good body mechanics, twist and bend moderately. Must be able to use both hands/wrists and perform work with moderate deviation and fine motor skills. Far vision must be accurate at 20/40, near vision at 20/20 with accurate depth perception, hearing not essential function.

Requirements
