About The Position

The Patient Financial Counselor position is a full-time role within the Enterprise Revenue Cycle department, primarily focused on assisting patients with their financial needs related to healthcare services. This remote position requires working weekdays, with possible weekends, and involves a variety of essential functions aimed at ensuring a smooth patient experience from arrival to visit closure. The role includes greeting patients, verifying insurance benefits, collecting financial liabilities, and maintaining accurate patient information. The counselor will also identify patients needing financial assistance and refer them accordingly, while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and policies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience in patient access, insurance verification, billing, or as a certified medical assistant preferred.
  • Ability to articulate explanations of Medicare, HIPAA, and EMTALA rules and regulations.
  • Mathematical aptitude and effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of basic human anatomy and medical terminology.
  • Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and ADT software.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.

Responsibilities

  • Greets patients arriving for their appointments and monitors patient flow.
  • Ensures all patient demographic and insurance information is complete and accurate.
  • Completes the registration process for walk-in patients and verifies/updates their information.
  • Verifies insurance benefits and collects patients' out-of-pocket financial liabilities.
  • Follows the Financial Clearance policy for non-urgent patient services.
  • Identifies patients in need of financial assistance and refers them to Financial Counselor.
  • Performs visit closure, including checking out patients and scheduling follow-up appointments.
  • Maintains knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and third-party payer requirements.
  • Communicates customer service issues and process improvement opportunities to management.
  • Meets productivity requirements and performance expectations.
  • Maintains excellent public relations with patients, families, and clinical staff.
