About The Position

Under the direction of the designated supervisor, and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals for the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the Personal Trainer will assist with the development and implementation of safe, enjoyable, and individually prescribed exercise programs for clients. With an emphasis on ensuring the highest quality service to members and guests, the Personal Trainer will work with all staff to welcome, connect, support, and engage all members, guests, and staff.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Must have a minimum of 6 months experience in the wellness field.
  • Must possess a nationally recognized Personal Training (PT) certification. The YMCA accepts PT certification from ACSM, NSCA, AFFAA, ACE, The Cooper Institute, IFPA, NASM, and NESTA.
  • Specialty II/Level 1 requirement: Must have a nationally recognized PT certification and 6 months training experience.
  • Specialty II/Level 2 requirement: Must have a nationally recognized PT certification and 2-4 years’ training experience.
  • Specialty II/Level 3 requirement: Must have a nationally recognized PT certification and 6 or more years’ training experience.
  • Must obtain YMCA Healthy Lifestyle Principles and Foundations of Strength and Conditioning within first 6 months of employment.
  • Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2.
  • Complete and maintain required trainings to include but not limited to: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment upon hire and annually thereafter.
  • Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and Child Protective Services check.
  • Ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints.
  • Ability to reason and define difficult problems with limited direction as to means and results.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations.
  • Ability to perform rigorous physical activity.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lifting and carrying equipment, tools, and supplies up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to demonstrate the use of a variety of cardiovascular and strength training machines/equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Support the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA.
  • Promote a professional values-based culture by leading with the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Lead in a manner that advances our cause to strengthen the foundations of community through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
  • Design safe, individual programs based on the needs, goals and fitness levels of participants.
  • Provide proper instruction on form and technique.
  • Maintain proper records and paperwork on clients.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Follow department Association standards.
  • Wear staff uniform and name tag, or professional attire when appropriate.
  • Act as a leader in emergency situations. Report any accidents or incidents according to Emergency Communication Action Plan.
  • Carry out other related duties as deemed necessary by the Wellness Department and center operations to ensure an excellent member experience.
