About The Position

The Permit Technician is responsible for processing and issuing various City related permits in compliance with local regulations and building codes. This role involves working closely with contractors and property owners to ensure all required documentation is accurate and complete. The technician will also provide information on permitting processes, assist with permit applications, and maintain detailed records. Additionally, the position requires coordination with various departments to ensure timely approvals and inspections for construction and renovation projects. Strong attention to detail, excellent customer service skills, and a solid understanding of building codes and permitting software are essential.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent, along with two years of experience in a building or planning department, including six months of experience in processing computerized building permit applications; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • ICC Permit Technician certification is required or must be obtained within one year of employment.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, familiarity with building plans, codes, ordinances and related terminology.
  • Knowledge of the processes and procedures associated with the construction permitting process.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on ensuring data entry accuracy.
  • Skill in both written and oral communication.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply departmental policies and procedures related to the acceptance and review of permit applications.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of people, including industry professionals, internal staff, and the general public, as well as maintain composure under difficult circumstances.
  • Ability to complete tasks with multiple distractions.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual in Spanish is preferred.
  • Knowledge of permitting software such as OpenGov or BluePrince, preferable.
