About The Position

Accepts and processes online and walk-in applications for building permits; assists with the assignment and tracking of code enforcement cases; manages the scheduling of building and code enforcement inspections; answers phone calls and walk-in customer questions regarding the building permitting, inspections and code enforcement processes. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to Assistant Director of Development Services or designee. This is a non-supervisory position. Works closely with City personnel, has frequent contact with representatives of various governmental, business entities, building trades, and the general public. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: This is a description of the way this job is currently performed; there is potential for accommodation. Processes building permits; code enforcement cases and scheduling inspections. Answers phone, email and walk-in customer questions regarding building permitting, inspections and code enforcement processes. Provides quality customer service to the customers of the department, other city staff and all other work contacts Serves as Notary Public. Performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of standard office procedures
  • General understanding of municipal government
  • Knowledge of building permitting and code enforcement
  • Knowledge of building construction
  • Knowledge of basic accounting and payment processing procedures
  • Ability to enter data accurately and consistently using standard software
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing and in a timely manner
  • Ability to assess and understand a variety of different situations and implement the appropriate next steps in handling customer complaints and/or requests
  • Ability to be a team player and establish effective working relations with co-workers
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public, including difficult or sensitive situations
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to operate multi-line phone system
  • Ability to operate using effective time management techniques and handle multiple tasks in quick succession
  • Ability to read and comprehend city code, ordinances, manuals, memos, letters and interpret technical drawings
  • Ability to process and reconcile payments
  • Ability to use permit tracking software to manage building permits, code enforcement cases and inspections
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least one year of municipal permit clerk, technician experience or building construction experience, or equivalent OR any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License

Nice To Haves

  • Notary Public Certification or ability to obtain within 12 months
  • ICC Permit Technician certification or ability to obtain within 6 months
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Applicants with two years of municipal permit clerk/technician experience or building construction experience with a current ICC Permit Technician Certification will be considered for Permit Technician II
