About The Position

The Permanent Art Collection Curator at Indiana State University is responsible for the stewardship, documentation, research, development, and care of the university's permanent art collection. This role involves ensuring the collection's growth through strategic acquisitions, maintaining the catalog, and prioritizing conservation needs. The curator will also provide access to the collection through exhibitions and collaborate with faculty and external stakeholders to enhance educational opportunities.

Requirements

• Master's Degree in Art History, Studio Art, or Museum Studies.
• 3 to 4 years of experience in a museum or gallery setting.
• Demonstrable knowledge of current issues in curatorial and registrar practices related to acquisitions, management, and conservation.
• Ability to work collaboratively with a wide array of stakeholders.
• Excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Stewardship and documentation of the permanent art collection.
• Research and development of the collection, focusing on prints, ceramics, and paintings.
• Provide access to the collection through on-campus venues and exhibitions.
• Maintain the catalog and ensure safe storage of artworks.
• Conduct condition reporting and prioritize conservation needs.
• Strategically acquire new pieces for the collection and identify objects for deaccession.
• Collaborate with the Department of Art and Design faculty to create experiential learning opportunities for students.
• Work with the Gallery Director to plan, install, and publicize exhibitions.
• Establish relationships with donors, collectors, and artists.
• Engage in grant writing and budget oversight.
