The Perioperative Technician II decontaminates, assembles, sterilizers, and distributes instruments, supplies, and equipment for patient care. Prepares case carts for operating room. Participates in the delivery of individualized perioperative nursing care under the supervision and guidance of a licensed physician or a registered professional nurse. Organizes and prepares equipment and supplies for patient care. Collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to assure quality patient care. The Perioperative Technician II Maintain assigned work areas and equipment in a clean and organized condition to maintain required standards for handling sterilized and clean materials and to maintain a safe work environment. Verify appropriate sterilization cycle to ensure all parameters have been met. Check indicators, sterile wraps for integrity, and if Immediate-Use Steam Sterilization (IUSS), verify sterilization parameters are met. Identify instrument procedure trays according to the prescribed manner (Censitrac & Doctor Preference Cards). Open package and handle all items following procedure. Mark items with identifying data and distributes or store in designated area. Notify appropriate CTL or Manager when unable to replace parts or with equipment deficiencies in the work area. Dispense products requested for sterile and non-sterile equipment and supplies. Assign priority to emergency requests and issue required supplies and equipment based on knowledge of procedure intended. Open and un-wrap materials, instruments and supplies according to established aseptic technique. Assists with Point of Use (POU) care of instruments. Tags damaged instruments for repair. Assists with turnover of Operating rooms including, turnover of instrument pans, opening of supplies, assisting the surgical team with appropriately delegated tasks to efficiently and effectively take care of patients. Apply aseptic techniques in daily work assignments and maintains sterile field. Cleans and/or safely operates selected equipment within the department. Effectively functions in crisis situations with appropriate actions based on sound judgement and submit appropriate communications. Prepares case carts for surgical procedures. Assist in orientation of new employees to each work assignment areas and total department operations as needed and/or assigned. Performs patient care activities to include: A. Reviews schedules and prepares equipment and room for each assigned case. Understands Doctor Preference Cards (DPC's) only opening essential supplies and equipment for the case vs. PRN (as needed) supplies and equipment. B. Organizes supplies and equipment for patient care. C. Transports and checks for proper functioning of equipment. D. Provides assistance to Physicians, RN’s and Physician Assistants in the delivery of care to patients. E. Transports patients and assists with moving and positioning of patients. F. Performs general cleaning and decontamination of supply carts, supplies, equipment and machines according to policy and procedure. G. Refers to Biomedical engineering and notifying charge nurse for repairs or maintenance of equipment. H. Uses technical skills to assist physicians. I. Applies knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served. Plans and participates in special projects as assigned. Assists in problem solving when needed in all related areas. Demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development. May be asked to provide care at other Carilion facilities to meet Clinic Mission, Values, and Guiding Principles. Communicates with other members of the health care team. Work requires prolonged periods of walking, bending, standing, lifting, pushing, and pulling. Works in the presence of hazardous materials and highly technical equipment. Has continuous exposure to body fluids, infectious diseases, unpleasant odors, and hazardous chemicals. Maintains confidentiality. Reports abnormal and critical information to the Lead Perioperative Technician, CTL or Manager. Must be conscientious with regard to procedures and capable of accepting high-pressure assignments, and all duties relative to the department. Requires continuous attention to detail in all work assignments. Assists in the training of O.R. nurses and related staff, as well as serve as a resource for other hospital departments. Willingness to accept new ideas and advance with the progression of ORS technology.
