About The Position

We are recruiting for a mission-driven Perioperative Support Technician to join our team at Denver Health. Our values are Respect, Belonging, Accountability, and Transparency. The Denver Health Inpatient Operating Room is an 11-room, highly specialized surgical unit that provides 24/7 surgical care to patients with complex and high-acuity needs. It serves the community of Denver, the State of Colorado, and surrounding states, offering a full spectrum of surgical services through continuous staffing, which minimizes the need for call while maintaining exceptional patient care. The unit specializes in a wide range of surgery services including General surgery, Trauma, Spine and Neurosurgery, Bariatric, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Genitourinary and Gynecology (GU/GYN), Plastics and Hand, Gender affirmation, Pediatrics, Oral maxillofacial and Dental, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Oncology, and Vascular surgery. It also features a state-of-the-art Hybrid Operating Room for advanced image-guided procedures. The Denver Health Bariatric Surgery Center, located within the inpatient OR, is the only MBSAQIP-certified hospital in Denver serving both adolescents (ages 16–20) and adults (ages 21–65). The nurse-to-patient ratio in the Inpatient OR is 1:1, ensuring highly personalized surgical care. The Perioperative Support Technician performs routine and specialized functions relating to technical support under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, functioning as a member of the Perioperative Services team.

Requirements

  • No High School Diploma and/or No GED
  • 1-3 years Clinical experience in a hospital setting
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Skill in maintaining records and recording test results.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, employees, physicians and the public.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and specialized functions relating to technical support under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, functions as member of the Perioperative Services team.
  • Transport patients to and from the operating room, ensuring their comfort and safety while maintaining patient confidentiality and privacy.
  • Perform cleaning and disinfection tasks within the operating room and surrounding areas to maintain a sterile environment, adhering to infection control protocols.
  • Manage the inventory of surgical supplies and equipment, including stocking and organizing to ensure availability and readiness for procedures.
  • Operate and monitor sterilization equipment, ensuring that all surgical instruments and equipment are properly sterilized according to established guidelines.
  • Assist in proper disposition of surgical specimens and hazardous materials, following strict protocols to ensure safety and compliance.
  • Participate in emergency response situations within the operating room, providing critical support under the direction of medical staff to ensure patient safety and care.
  • Provide transportation of patients to the Preoperative area and from the PACU area, assist with lifting, positioning and transferring patients as needed.
  • Communicate with Sterile Processing and circulating nurses regarding the selection and transport of equipment, positioning devices, supplies and instrumentation.
  • Check, clean, and restock all assigned areas.
  • Return equipment, supplies, instrumentation, and case carts to appropriate locations.
  • Clean and set-up assigned rooms in between cases.
  • Assist in opening sterile supplies under the supervision of an RN.
  • Assist with timely room turnovers.
  • Pick cases according to preference cards including all equipment and positioning devices.
  • Practice standards of OR sanitation and disinfection according to established policies and recommendations.
  • Keeps an accurate record of patient status and care in accordance with department guidelines and requirements.
  • Completes checklists, writes clear narratives, and enters data into the eHR as appropriate.
  • Manages patient load effectively and efficiently.
  • Is able to adjust care given based on volume, acuity, cases, census, and department needs without jeopardizing patient or making patient feel less important.
  • Able to plan and effectively organize work and establish priorities.
  • Anticipates needs well and coordinates care with other departments to ensure timely delivery of care and services.
  • List any specific deliverables or project outcomes that were assigned to the employee within the rating period and assess the quality and timeliness of the work completed.
  • Seeks additional assignments when volumes are low to ensure maximum effectiveness of department.
  • Promotes unity and offers support within the work group, between functions, and across departments to accomplish objectives.
  • Is able to discern when to seek assistance in order to ensure quality patient care.
  • Is respectful and responsive to patients, families, designated responsible parties, etc.
  • Practices sound safety and infection control practices according to hospital policies and procedures; identifies safety and infection control issues.
