The primary function of this position is to provide technical assistance and coordination of the usage of equipment, supplies and instruments before during and after surgical procedures. The Perioperative Services Support Tech is trained to assist nursing staff with direct and indirect nursing care. The Unit Coordinator or Charge Nurse on duty assigns the Perioperative Services Support Tech specific responsibilities. The Perioperative Services Support Tech may be assigned to one specific task, or may rotate assignments during their shift. The Perioperative Services Support Tech will possess a high school diploma or general education degree (GED), or one to three years of related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.   • Assists in the responsibility for the care, handling, storage and transporting of professional supplies and equipment. Is aware of the need for special handling of surgical equipment and supplies.
  • Assists in pulling supplies and equipment for scheduled surgical cases.
  • Adheres to the operating room standards on aseptic technique and infection control.
  • Adheres to the policy and procedures, which govern the operating room.
  • Operates the video camera and monitoring equipment during procedures requiring video.
  • Notifies the Bio-Med Tech and the OR Manager of equipment malfunctioning that cannot be corrected immediately.
  • Participates in unit meetings.
  • Assists OR personnel in the turnover of OR rooms, i.e. preparing equipment, supplies, housekeeping duties as needed and the acquisition of or dispersing of OR patients as needed.
  • Assists in maintaining and restocking OR supplies.
  • Assists OR personnel during procedures, i.e. positioning patients, moving patients as needed, assisting in obtaining supplies or equipment not in the room.
  • Assists in the collection of specimens, records specimens in logbook and transport specimens to pathology at specified times (9:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM, 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM) In accordance with the universal precaution policy.
  • Organizes and maintains required OR related forms, i.e. charge sheets, pathology sheets, peri-operative record, etc.).
  • Assists with washing, decontamination and returning equipment to storage areas.
  • Dons gloves, gowns according to protocol for sterile tech.
  • Maintains sterile technique according to protocol.
  • Assists surgeon in retraction as directed by physician.
  • Assists with ambulation of surgery unit patients as indicated in treatment regimes.
  • Assists with wiping equipment with disinfectant before bringing equipment into OR rooms or hallways.
  • Assists in cleaning OR transport stretchers.
  • Assists in housekeeping functions to maintain cleanliness in the Operating room in order to ensure a safe patient environment.
  • Demonstrates good interpersonal relationships. Extends courtesy and consideration for others. Accepts and acts upon constructive criticism. Seeks clarification of duties when indicated.
  • Maintains an employment record in accordance with hospital policy. Complies with attendance policies. Reports all accidents and injuries.
  • Adhere to acceptable dress code.
  • Shares in the responsibility of providing emergency services.
  • Maintains and increases standards of performance. Attends department unit meetings. Participates in in-service classes. Shares knowledge with others.
  • Participates in the orientation of new employees.
  • Participates interdepartmentally in the Quality Improvement process.
  • Knowledgeable of all hospital safety related codes and performs duties in drills and actual emergencies. Reviews the operation of emergency equipment. Reports unsafe conditions and incidents.

  • Able to demonstrate competency in age specific criteria as applicable to job scope.
  • Follows North Oaks Health System's Compliance programs and all Federal and State regulatory guidelines.
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge in PACS. Identifies patient file as requested by MD for use during procedure.
