About The Position

This Clinical Education Specialist will be supporting the Perioperative Services Department at MercyOne Central Iowa. MercyOne Central Iowa, including MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, is a large medical center and referral hub in the Des Moines metro area, with 802 beds and over 7,000 colleagues. The role involves developing and coordinating educational activities for the Perioperative Services Department, including orientation for new personnel and in-service offerings. The educator will serve a diverse patient population from neonate to geriatric. The position requires maintaining current orientation programs, acting as a liaison, developing continuing education, serving as a resource for clinical topics and regulatory requirements, acting as a professional role model, supporting performance improvement, and coordinating student programs. The educator will also routinely perform procedures in the OR to maintain visibility and interaction with staff and physicians, participate in meetings, and coordinate competency evaluations.

Requirements

  • Possession of a current or compact state license as a registered nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa.
  • Bachelor degree in nursing required, or actively in pursuit of BSN degree (accepted into a BSN Program and/or currently enrolled). Expected to take at least six credits per year at Unit Director’s discretion for exception.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in the Perioperative Services.
  • Basic Life Support certified within six (6) weeks of hire. The acceptable credentialing body is the American Heart Association.
  • Specialty Certification required within one (1) year of appointment to position. (Only if this is their main position, not secondary position)
  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains orientation program, which is current with clinical practice in Perioperative Services and implements it for all new staff.
  • Acts as a liaison between new staff, current employees and managers.
  • Develops and coordinates educational activities of the department including continuing education of staff members and orientation of staff to new equipment/procedures.
  • Acts as resource person in such areas as policies and procedures, AORN/ASPAN standards and other clinical topics, regulatory requirements (Joint Commission, OSHA) and suggests updates to policies and procedures as needed.
  • Acts as professional role model and assists staff (especially preceptors) in professional development.
  • Supports and participates in departmental Performance Improvement projects.
  • Serves as liaison for all internal and external student programs and staff clinical experiences and the coordination of student observation/participation in the Perioperative Services Department.
  • Routinely performs procedures in the OR, maintaining a high level of visibility and interaction with both staff and physicians.
  • Actively participates in meetings and on inter-, intradepartmental, and external committees as assigned.
  • Coordinates and implements plan for competency evaluation of Perioperative Services staff.
