About The Position

Position Qualifications: Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required. C Special Skill / Aptitudes Demonstrates knowledge of aseptic technique and standard precautions. Ability to comprehend factual materials presented in orientation classes and during on the job training in order to gain knowledge of aseptic techniques and universal precautions specific to the operating room. Successfully meets the outcome measures of a skill training program that includes passing a cognitive examination for the core role, with subsequent unit specific training as needed. Interpersonal skills conducive to participating on a self-directed work team. Ability to understand and utilize organizational structures and channels of communication and policies. Ability to communicate with various levels of hospital personnel. New hire employees are required to successfully complete a 180 day probationary period. Probationary employees may be terminated at any time by the hospital. Regular employees transferring into this position are required to successfully complete a 90 day trial period during which either the Hospital or the employee may initiate removal of the employee from the job following the provisions of the agreement. Organizational and analytical skills necessary in order to understand/implement OR Board and OR room requirements and resolve problems. Must be able to prioritize effectively, handle tasks/assignments concurrently and accurately with numerous interruptions and manage time. Ability to stand, bend, push, pull and/or lift and carry heavy materials weighting up to 50 pounds in accordance with established body mechanics/safety procedures. Excellent customer service oriented skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of internal and external customers and community groups. D.Experience Previous work experience with operating room instruments or in an operating room environment is preferred. Basic telephone and computer skills highly recommended. III Duties / Responsibilities: Assists operating room staff in facilitating surgical cases, using computerized preference cards as resources (referencing various types of cases and surgeons). Assembles supplies for surgical cases using protocols for handling and storing sterile supplies. Assists nursing personnel on the sterile set-up of an operative room for specific procedures and surgeons. Obtains, cleans and sets up equipment needed for surgery. Includes cleaning and assembling complicated equipment such as carousel suctions, stirrups, OR beds and bed attachments. Delivers specimens to the appropriate Pathology/Laboratory area. Performs careful cleaning and flash autoclaving of specialty instruments between cases. Cleans and returns equipment and/or supplies to proper storage areas/CSR/other departments. Assists in operation by holding retractors or retracting to provide sufficient exposure using good sterile technique. Prepares and transports patients safely while maintaining modesty. According to established policy and procedure, performs between case cleaning within the OR Suite, maintaining a neat and organized physical environment. Under the directions of the OR nurse, assists with transfer, lifting and/or positioning of patients, utilizing correct body mechanics for an anesthetized patient. Assists in patient preparation by holding patient's limbs during prep. Cleans, stocks and maintains specialty carts and equipment. Checks and stocks linen and solutions. Monitors and maintains gas tank inventory. Maintains supplies and materials in a cost effective manner under direction of the service coordinators. Maintains surgical transport carts. Routinely inventories carts for appropriate equipment. Completes work order as appropriate. Maintains confidentiality of patient records/information. Attends in-service education program as necessary. Performs additional supportive duties as directed by the Supervisor, Board Coordinator or designated RN. Performs scheduled and random inventory and restocks items when supply levels reach low levels in the OR suites. Daily room checks, to put away sterile supplies. Fill out repair forms on equipment and take it to the OR Materials Coordinator. Return repaired equipment and notify coordinator of all repairs sent out and returned. Handles and stores sterile supplies properly to protect the integrity of the package and maintain its sterility. Maintain a neat, clean work environment and utilize good storage and distribution techniques (i.e., replace preference cards, prompt return of equipment from OR suites and halls to proper storage location, proper care of lead aprons). Processes all necessary paperwork/documentation accurately and timely. Collaborates with other personnel within the Hospital and outside the Hospital to provide services that will assure efficient operations are maintained in department (i.e., Buildings & Grounds, BioSentry, etc). Communicates all pertinent information related to department supplies and equipment promptly and thoroughly to appropriate personnel. Makes recommendations regarding inventory adjustments and operational changes that may improve department efficiency and economy of inventory. Collaborates with other personnel within the Hospital and outside the Hospital to provide services that will assure efficient operations are maintained in department (i.e., Buildings & Grounds, BioSentry, etc). When assigned to Service Line Coordinator will be assisting with patient positioning, scrubbing into cases to retract, setup of service line specific equipment (Hana tables, Davinci robot etc.) as well as the preparation of case carts for the current and following days’ surgical procedures. Communicates all pertinent information related to department supplies and equipment promptly and thoroughly to appropriate personnel. Makes recommendations regarding inventory adjustments and operational changes that may improve department efficiency and economy of inventory.
