Job Summary The Perioperative Assistant supports efficient surgical operations by performing operating room turnover, maintaining sanitation standards, assisting with equipment and supply management, and transporting patients within the surgical services department. This role helps ensure safe, timely surgical procedures by supporting licensed clinical staff and maintaining compliance with infection prevention and safety regulations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification.
  • Ability to safely transport patients and move equipment.
  • Understanding of infection prevention and cleaning protocols.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced surgical environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior healthcare or surgical services experience.
  • One (1) year of experience in surgical services, sterile processing, or healthcare environmental services.
  • Familiarity with operating room procedures and sterile environments.

Responsibilities

  • Perform operating room turnover between surgical cases to maintain efficient surgical workflow.
  • Clean and disinfect procedure rooms and patient care areas in accordance with infection prevention policies and state regulations.
  • Assist with terminal cleaning activities including floors, walls, ceilings, vents, and surgical equipment.
  • Remove trash and regulated waste according to hospital policy.
  • Transport soiled linens to designated collection areas.
  • Clean stretchers, beds, and wheelchairs between patient use.
  • Move stretchers, beds, and equipment throughout the surgical department as needed.
  • Prepare procedure rooms after cleaning by ensuring required supplies and equipment are available.
  • Maintain appropriate stock levels of procedural and environmental cleaning supplies.
  • Stock blanket warmers as needed.
  • Replace sharps containers in compliance with OSHA guidelines.
  • Assist procedural staff by transporting equipment within the surgical services department.
  • Safely transport patients between procedure rooms, pre-operative holding, recovery, and discharge areas.
  • Assist licensed nursing staff with patient positioning in the procedure room as directed.
  • Maintain awareness of sterile versus non-sterile environments.
  • Respond appropriately during emergency situations under the direction of clinical staff.
  • Support compliance with infection prevention standards, OSHA safety regulations, HIPAA privacy requirements, CMS Conditions of Participation, and Arkansas Department of Health regulations.
  • Maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification.
  • Complete required annual education and competency assessments.
  • Follow established lines of authority and safety procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support safe and efficient perioperative operations.
  • Communicate effectively with members of the surgical and perioperative team.
  • Answer telephone calls professionally when needed.
  • Complete assignments independently and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain professional appearance and hygiene standards consistent with surgical services policies.
