This position implements perinatal hepatitis B prevention services throughout Regions 9/10 and 1. Assures or conducts perinatal hepatitis B prevention and case management services for HBsAg+ pregnant women living in communities outside the jurisdiction of a local health department. Serves as a liaison between regional, local and central office Immunization Unit staff on all matters related to perinatal hepatitis B prevention. Conducts site visits to local health departments to assess perinatal hepatitis B prevention activities and to birthing hospitals and centers to assess compliance with state laws and reporting requirements. Makes recommendations to improve perinatal hepatitis B prevention activities. Trains staff at birthing hospitals/centers and other health providers on procedures and practices to prevent the perinatal transmission of the hepatitis B virus. Works as a team member and informs the Program Manager of important activities.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: Nursing theory and processes
  • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA)
  • Infection Control/Standard Precautions
  • Knowledge of or ability to gain knowledge of: Prenatal and maternity standards of care
  • Natural history of disease, with emphasis on vaccine-preventable diseases
  • Case Management
  • Quality assurance practices
  • Customer service principles
  • Hepatitis testing and prevention guidelines
  • Skill in: Vaccine administration.
  • Collection serological specimens, especially from infants.
  • Conducting field investigations and interviewing clients and patients.
  • Conducting education presentations and training.
  • Communicating effectively in English both orally and in writing, to include report writing
  • Use of a personal computer and basic applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Power Point
  • Ability to: Travel
  • Document medical and vaccine histories and clinical signs and symptoms accurately.
  • Interpret laboratory results accurately.
  • Gather, assemble, correlate and analyze facts and devise solutions for clinical problems.
  • Comprehend and implement program goals and to exercise judgement and discretion in applying and interpreting policies and procedures.
  • Establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Work well with individuals, groups, communities and agencies.
  • Handle conflict in a professional manner
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Texas, or eligible for Texas licensure. If eligible for Texas licensure, must obtain prior to employment date.
  • Must possess a valid Class C Texas Driver License and liability insurance coverage as required by Texas Law.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in using computer systems and programs including Word, Excel, databases and Power Point.
  • Prefer experience in preparing and conducting presentations or trainings.
  • Prefer experience in Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts site visits to local departments to assess perinatal hepatitis B prevention activities and to birthing centers and hospitals to assess compliance with state laws and reporting requirements.
  • Plans and conducts education on the importance of hepatitis B prevention.
  • Conducts other duties as assigned. “Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.” May assist with STD treatment.
