About The Position

The Perinatal Health Educator will facilitate, implement, present, and evaluate health education programs and services to patients of all ages. In particular, the role will provide support and guidance to expectant mothers on topics of prenatal/postpartum care and infant basics. This position works within the scope of the Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program (CPSP) to provide comprehensive support and care to expectant mothers and assist them to be better prepared for the prenatal and postpartum experience. The role is split between providing CPSP services and general health education services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (degree in public health or related field preferred) or high school diploma with 4 - 8 years equivalent experience required
  • Minimum of at least 1 year of working experience in providing prenatal care is required
  • Current Group Fitness Certification from a nationally recognized fitness training organization (i.e. ACE, AFAA, NASM, ACSM) or ability to obtain it within 6 months of first available training date is required
  • Current National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) Certification or ability to obtain it within 6 months of first available training date is required
  • Current documentation of Basic Life Support is required
  • Ability to facilitate wellness and exercise classes for older adult patients
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to present ideas accurately, concisely, and effectively both orally and in writing; assist in the promotion of public health education programs
  • Proficient computer skills including use of Microsoft Office and Outlook
  • May be required to work sometimes at satellite NEMS sites and/or at weekend events
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule in a variety of settings
  • Fluent in Chinese (Cantonese), both oral and written required.
  • Must be able to read and write English fluently

Nice To Haves

  • 1–2 years of group fitness teaching experience preferred
  • Fluent in Mandarin preferred.
  • Knowledgeable in hospital procedures, health care systems and clinical practices preferred
  • Knowledge in physiology, clinical science, behavioral health, neuroscience, pain control, and relaxation techniques preferred

Responsibilities

  • CPSP Provides support, guidance and documentation per CPSP protocols to expectant mothers on issues related to expectancy, pregnancy, prenatal lifestyle and postpartum
  • Educates patients about labor and delivery, hospitalization, pain control and relaxation techniques
  • Assists patients in reviewing traditional practices and adopting modern healthy family goals and preventative principles
  • Assists patients in coping with discomfort and avoiding harmful practices
  • Active member of CPSP
  • Participates in trainings provided by CPSP or Medi-Cal resources to further education and keep current with industry changes, clinical requirements, communication with local and regional representatives of CPSP.
  • Assesses patient needs, establishes priorities, develops, recommends, updates, implements, and evaluates health education programs and services
  • Provides health coaching in group classes or one-on-one health education services to members and the general public
  • Counsels patients on a variety of subjects such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, smoking cessation, substance abuse, teen health, Hepatitis B, health screenings, immunizations, proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle options, etc.
  • Coordinates a wide range of health education services, including recruiting members, establishing referral system, providing scheduling and logistical support to promote the well-being of patients and the community
  • May be required to work sometimes at satellite NEMS sites and/or at weekend events
  • Develops and recommends high quality, culturally appropriate, written, and audio-visual health education materials.
  • Prepares and distributes materials regarding NEMS’ services
  • Performs relevant community outreach and education activities to targeted groups and individuals
  • Serves as a resource to patients and provides them with the best information available
  • Collects, tabulates, and analyzes program data, and prepares monthly services reports
  • Provides phone call services and schedules appointments for patients for events and services such as classes and support groups
  • Performs other job duties as required by manager/supervisor
