About The Position

Under direct supervision, provides care, maintenance, assembly and operation of all cardiopulmonary bypass systems, all cardiac and pulmonary assist devices, all electronic physiological pressure monitoring equipment and pacemakers in the operating room, intra-aortic balloon pumping systems, all autologous blood salvage systems, and other related systems. During cardiopulmonary bypass, the perfusionist is responsible for monitoring blood gases, and the adequate anticoagulation of the patient, may administer blood products, anesthetic agents, and medications to the patients. In addition to these critical responsibilities in the clinical setting, the perfusionist also evaluates and selects new equipment, orders supplies, compiles research and clinical data.

Requirements

  • High school Diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in a CAHEA approved Perfusion Training Program preferred.
  • Graduated from an accredited cardiovascular perfusion education program; or currently enrolled in an accredited cardiovascular perfusion education program with an anticipated graduation prior to the date of the examination; or admitted to the examination process before April 15, 1981; or previously certified by the ABCP. (per the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion).
  • Analytical ability required in order to set-up, calibrate, operate, and maintain various equipment.
  • Current certification as a Clinical Perfusion by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
  • OR Board Eligible by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion with the requirement of being certified within the first year of employment. If not certified within 1 year of employment, will be terminated. BLS or ACLS certification required or become certified within one month of start date.

  • Responsible for monitoring blood gases
  • Responsible for the adequate anticoagulation of the patient
  • May administer blood products, anesthetic agents, and medications to the patients
  • Evaluates and selects new equipment
  • Orders supplies
  • Compiles research and clinical data
