About The Position

The Cardiovascular Perfusionist performs clinical perfusion functions essential for supporting or treating the cardiopulmonary/circulatory system of patients. This role involves operating extracorporeal circulation equipment during medical situations that require support or replacement of the patient's cardiopulmonary/circulatory functions and ensuring proper management of physiologic variables through continuous monitoring.

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) required; additional advanced life support certifications may be required based on department policies.
  • For incumbents trained after April 15, 1981: Must maintain cardiovascular perfusion certification or be eligible to take the certification examination.
  • For incumbents trained after April 15, 1981: Completion of clinical and didactic coursework from an accredited perfusion training program is required.
  • Strong knowledge of cardiovascular and respiratory systems, physiology, and anatomy.
  • Experience operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining cardiovascular perfusion, life support, and blood salvage equipment, instrumentation, and supplies.
  • Experience in open heart surgery and surgical perfusion procedures.
  • Knowledge of innovations in open heart surgery and related fields.
  • Ability to apply biology, chemistry, and physiology knowledge in a hospital operating room setting.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and manage extracorporeal circulation equipment during open heart surgeries and other clinical procedures requiring cardiopulmonary support.
  • Monitor and maintain the physiologic functions of patients by adjusting and troubleshooting perfusion equipment as necessary.
  • Ensure the safety and stability of patients by accurately managing blood flow, oxygenation, and other critical functions during procedures.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of perfusion procedures, equipment settings, and patient responses.
  • Collaborate with surgical teams to develop and execute perfusion plans tailored to individual patient needs.
  • Stay current with advancements in perfusion technology, equipment, and procedures to optimize patient outcomes.
