About The Position

The University of Mississippi Medical Center is seeking a Perfusionist - PRN for the Division of Pediatric and Congenital Heart in the School of Medicine Surgery department. The primary responsibility of this role is to operate the cardiopulmonary bypass machine during open-heart surgeries and to monitor and operate various medical devices such as the cell saver, blood gas analyzer, and intra-aortic balloon pump. The Perfusionist will be involved in procedures that support or temporarily replace a patient's circulatory or respiratory functions.

Requirements

  • Must meet minimum certification requirements by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
  • Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
  • NALS, PALS, BLS certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform extracorporeal circulation/cardiopulmonary support, counterpulsation, circulatory support/ventricular assistance, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, blood conservation techniques/auto transfusion, and myocardial preservation.
  • Monitor and analyze anticoagulation, hematological, and physiological functions and blood/gas chemistry.
  • Induce and reverse hypothermia/hyperthermia; perform hemodilution and hemofiltration; administer medications, blood components, and anesthetic agents via the extracorporeal circuit.
  • Provide educational in-services to multidisciplinary members of the healthcare team on safe and effective operation of equipment and care of the patient.
  • Conduct periodic in-service training on cardiopulmonary bypass procedures for residents, students, and nurses.
  • Assess function of equipment and evaluate by means of quality control protocols.
  • Maintain equipment maintenance records and inventory.
  • Research equipment needs and collaborate with hospital management and departments to assure provision of equipment and supplies.
  • Collect, analyze, disseminate, and maintain data on cardiac surgery patients as appropriate.
  • Participate in databased performance improvement programs.
  • Research new products and devise new design plans for efficiency and cost containment while preserving high quality standards and outcomes.
  • Participate in professional organizations and related research activities.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication and presentations at national and international scientific meetings.
  • Review current extracorporeal literature and participate in continuing education seminars.
  • Provide on-call coverage for routine and emergency cardiovascular procedures.
