About The Position

The Perfusionist at Hackensack University Medical Center plays a critical role in supporting surgical procedures by operating heart-lung machines and other devices essential for cardiopulmonary bypass. This position requires collaboration with surgeons and anesthesiologists to ensure patient safety and effective care during surgeries. The perfusionist is responsible for monitoring patient status, conducting necessary analyses, and maintaining accurate records throughout the surgical process.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A minimum of a degree in perfusion technology or a related science.
  • Perfusionist License or NJ Perfusionist Temporary License.

Nice To Haves

  • 3 years of clinical perfusion experience.
  • Certified in Cardiovascular Perfusion.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct cardiopulmonary bypass safely in accordance with department policies and accepted practices.
  • Ensure all routine and emergency cases are performed according to policy and procedure under the primary surgeon's guidelines.
  • Review patient medical records prior to procedures to assess disease scope and make appropriate judgments regarding bypass techniques.
  • Provide extracorporeal services to patients of all ages, modifying care as needed to meet patient requirements.
  • Maintain readiness to initiate bypass throughout the procedure, completing necessary pre-bypass checklists.
  • Respond appropriately to patient medical status when using intra-aortic balloon pumps and other devices, recording all responses.
  • Communicate with the surgical team regarding patient condition throughout the procedure.
  • Monitor anticoagulation, acid-base balance, hemodynamics, and other parameters, keeping them within acceptable limits.
  • Identify and modify care based on the specific needs of the patient population served.
  • Perform point of care blood gas analysis and manage data reporting accurately.
  • Utilize the Medtronic Plus Hemostasis Management System when applicable for hemostasis management.
  • Complete patient records accurately using the department's computerized record system.
  • Provide coverage at affiliate locations when requested, and perform other duties as assigned.
