The position ensures rational drug therapy by reviewing inpatient and outpatient medication orders prior to dispensing. The pharmacist evaluates new orders against existing patient profiles and provides appropriate pharmaceutical care. This role involves detecting, communicating, and avoiding drug interactions and the administration of drugs to which the patient may be allergic. The pharmacist is responsible for contacting prescribers for issue resolution and dispensing prescription medication to inpatients, outpatients, and employees as per departmental policies. Additionally, the pharmacist checks all work conducted by non-licensed personnel requiring direct pharmacist supervision and authorization, such as unit-dose cassette filling and I.V. batching. The role also includes dispensing and maintaining accurate records of controlled substances, tax-free alcohol, and investigational new drugs.
