Counsels patients and families concerning genetic issues. Serves as a resource to physicians, staff, and other genetic counselors regarding genetic issues. Job Description: Essential Responsibilities: Counsels patients and families concerning genetic issues which typically involves genetic or other testing. Interviews and evaluates patients' medical and genetic information. Recommends and coordinates additional testing and referrals. Provides extensive patient contact; explains procedures and risks, aids with decision-making, and provides psychosocial counseling as needed and follow-up. Maintains appropriate records including patient information, progress notes and charts, statistics, and encounter forms. Provides summary letters and other necessary documentation to referring providers and patients. Serves as resource to patients, providers, residents, and others regarding genetic counseling issues. Works directly and meets regularly with administrative management and Medical Director regarding the genetics counseling program. Maintains current knowledge regarding trends and developments in the field of genetics from multiple professional sources. Attends genetics conferences and presentations.
