It is the philosophy of BID-Plymouth to follow the LEAN methodology in order to provide the full continuum of health care services and the best quality patient centered care.Duties/ResponsibilitiesThe Physician Assistant (PA) may serve the patients of his/her supervising licensed physician (Supervising/Designee Physician) in all types of clinical care settings at the BIDH-Plymouth including but not limited to the operating room.Under the supervision of the supervising physician or his/her designee Physician, the PA may perform any and all services which are:(a). within the competence of the PA, as determined by the supervising physician's and/or Chief PA assessment of his/her training and experience; and(b). with the scope of services for which the supervising physician can provide adequate supervision to ensure that accepted standards of medical practice are followed.Nothing contained here shall be construed to allow the PA to:(a). give general anesthesia;(b). perform any procedure involving ionizing radiation, except in an emergency situation where the procedure is performed under the direction and control of a licensed physician; or(c). render a formal medical opinion on procedures involving ionizing radiation. Where the PA is involved in the performance of major invasive procedures, such procedures shall be undertaken under specific written protocols, which have been developed between the supervising physician, Chief PA and the PA and which specify the level of supervision the service requires (refer to enclosed Procedural Competency Tier), e.g., Tier 1 (supervising physician/Chief PA in the room); Tier 2 (supervising physician/Chief PA in the building); or Tier 3 (supervising physician/Chief PA available by telephone).Where the PA is involved in the performance of surgical consultations, such consultations shall be undertaken under specific written protocols, which have been developed between the supervising physician, Chief PA and PA which specify the level of supervision and communication such service requires (refer to enclosed Surgical Consultation Hierarchy), e.g. Tier 1 (all admission requests to surgical service), Tier 2 (all life threatening consults) and Tier 3 (PA discretion).Performs comprehensive and problem-focused histories and physical examinationsDiagnoses and treats illnesses and injuriesOrders and interprets laboratory and radiographic studiesEducates and counsels patientsPerforms minor surgical proceduresPerforms First and Second Assist duties in surgery for all subspecialtiesRenders emergency careFacilitates patient referral to the appropriate physician or agencyPrescribes medication in compliance with state and hospital guidelinePerforms first assist dutiesAssists with surgical proceduresConducts daily hospital rounds when requiredWrite orders and progress notes when requiredPerforms all admission history and physicalsOrders appropriate laboratory and radiographic testsPerforms appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studiesEvaluates and clarifies clinical conditionsFormulates and implements treatment and therapeutic plans for hospitalized patientsHandles discharge planning and dictates discharge summaries when requiredHospital Care:1st/2nd assistant in surgery: Performs first and second assistant duties. This includes and is not limited to suture and closure of wounds, placement of dressing, drains, Vac sponges, etc. Pre-op: Obtain consent and educate family and patient on proposed surgery. Perform and document surgical consultation and history and physical. Review all pertinent laboratory and imaging study review prior to surgery. Order all preoperative labs, studies, medications and preps required. Post-op: Written orders in the recovery room, talk with family, visits patients, and performs post-op procedures and notes. Surgical coverage of all postoperative patients on the general wards or in the critical care unit. Discharge planning: Dictates discharge summaries, writes prescriptions, explain discharge instructions. Consults: Remain available for all in hospital consultations (ED, ICU, Floor) and follow Surgical Consultation Hierarchy protocol. Consults include request for invasive procedures in all clinical areas. Inpatients: Remain available for coverage of all surgical subspecialty patients admitted at BIDP

Requirements

  • Current MA license
  • Graduate of PA program
  • Registration/Certification

Responsibilities
