About The Position

Join MSK as an Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring (IONM) Specialist, where you will play a vital role in supporting surgical teams and safeguarding the functional integrity of neural structures during complex operative procedures. This position combines advanced neurophysiologic monitoring, patient support, precise documentation, and hands-on OR equipment management to ensure the highest standards of intraoperative safety and care. Role Overview: Perform comprehensive intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring techniques—including somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs), motor evoked potentials (MEPs), brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs), limb and cranial nerve EMGs, and intraoperative electrocorticography—under the supervision of a staff neurologist. Evaluate requisitions, discuss monitoring protocols with neurologists, anesthesiologists, and surgeons, and tailor procedures to ensure patient comfort and effective monitoring. Ensure patient safety by following infection control guidelines, maintaining electrical safety, and adapting monitoring techniques for patients with sensory impairment. Perform inpatient and outpatient EMGs as needed and conduct routine EEGs on days without OR cases. Set up, maintain, troubleshoot, and coordinate routine and emergent repairs of OR neurophysiology equipment in collaboration with Clinical Engineering and vendors. Communicate intraoperative response changes promptly to neurosurgeons and collaborate closely with anesthesia and surgical teams to support safe and efficient OR workflows.

Requirements

  • Experience performing SEPs, MEPs, BAEPs, limb and cranial nerve EMG, and intraoperative electrocorticography in the OR environment.
  • Strong understanding of aseptic technique, infection control, and electrical safety in patient care settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate monitoring quality, resolve signal artifacts, and adjust procedures based on patient needs or surgical conditions.
  • Technical proficiency in OR neurophysiology equipment setup, troubleshooting, and coordinating maintenance/repairs with vendors and Clinical Engineering.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for communicating effectively with patients, families, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and departmental leadership.
  • Commitment to accuracy in documentation and adherence to MSK guidelines and regulatory requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • CNIM certification (ABRET) strongly preferred.
  • R. EEG T. or R. EP T. (ABRET) is a plus.
  • Eligibility for ABRET certification will also be considered.
