About The Position

The Peer Survivor Support Specialists are well-prepared to provide comprehensive and empathetic support to survivors, helping them on their journey to recovery.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED (Required)
  • Personal Recovery Experience: Must have had a Cancer Diagnosis, any stage of Survivorship.
  • Certification: Must obtain certification from the West Virginia Certification Board for Addiction and Prevention Professionals (WVCBAPP) or an equivalent recognized certification.
  • Must complete the American Psychosocial Oncology Society Training Psychosocial Oncology Knowledge and Skills Certificate Course.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED;46 hours of training specific to the required domains, including 16 hours of ethics.
  • Level of Experience: At least 500 hours of volunteer or paid experience specific to the domains of recovery support.
  • Supervision: 25 hours specific to the domains, with at least 6 hours in each domain, provided by qualified supervisory staff.
  • Continuing Education: Must Complete 20 hours of Continuing education every 2 years, including six hours of ethics.

Responsibilities

  • Providing Emotional Support: Offer survivors one-on-one coaching and emotional support individually and during support group sessions.
  • Facilitating Support Groups: Lead and facilitate support group meetings to provide a safe space for survivors to share their experiences and support each other.
  • Resource Connection: Assist survivors in connecting with resources related to housing, employment, healthcare, and additional treatment options.
  • Collaboration with Professionals: Work closely with mental health professionals to establish and implement personalized recovery plans.
  • Appointment Management: Help survivors manage their appointments with Mental health professionals and other necessary services.
  • Health and Safety Reporting: Report any concerns about health and safety to the appropriate care team members.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and confidential client encounters and progress records.
  • Community Outreach: Engage in community outreach efforts to raise awareness about the program's benefits.
  • Education and Advocacy: Educate survivors, their families, and the community about mental health and substance use disorders.
