The Peer Support Specialist is a person in a peer-designated role providing direct services with a personal experience of recovery from mental health, substance use, or trauma conditions who receives specialized training and supervision to guide and support others who are experiencing similar mental health, substance use or trauma issues toward increased wellness. A Peer Support Specialist is an individual who has made a personal commitment to his or her recovery, has maintained that recovery over some time, has taken the 80-hour Peer Support Learning training (or equivalent) to work in mutuality with others, and is willing to share what he or she has learned about recovery in an inspirational way.
