The role of a Peer Support Specialist is to serve as a mental health and/or co-occurring condition who has been trained and certified to help others with these conditions, as well as identifying and achieving specific life and recovery goals. Peers work as a bridge linking people to services as they transition from hospitals or jails into the community.

Requirements

Ability to perform tasks on the computer including working with Microsoft 360, Excel, Word and other basic programs.
Valid driver’s license, auto insurance coverage and reliable transportation
Pass criminal background check and other regulatory checks
Provide proof of your education
High School Diploma or GED
NC Certified Peer Support Specialist
Must have experience working with individuals with mental health or substance use disorders and have the knowledge, skills, and abilities required by the population and age to be served
Resume must include relevant employment dates including month and year, and populations served.

Responsibilities

Provide coaching, mentoring, and consultation to the individual to promote recovery, self-advocacy, and self-direction
Promote wellness management strategies, which include delivering manualized interventions (e.g. Wellness Recovery Action Planning or Illness Management and Recovery)
Model recovery values, attitudes, beliefs, and personal action to encourage wellness and resilience
Provide consultation to team members to assist in understanding of recovery and the role of the Peer Support Specialists, promoting a culture in which individual’s points of view and preferences are recognized, understood, respected, and integrated into treatment
