About the position

Afghan Community Peer Support Specialists will provide financial wellness coaching, service connection, skills training, and advocacy to Afghan community members in partnership with social service partners, community-based organizations, local refugee resettlement agencies, and employment entities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advocacy and engagement with and on behalf of Afghan community members to community partners, local non-profit agencies, employers and social adjustment entities.
  • Must be bilingual in Dari or Pashto.
  • Provide financial wellness engagement, budget training and other sustainability planning services to Afghan families in the program, utilizing provided curriculum and in partnership with Financial Wellness Educators.
  • Organize and participate in education opportunities related to financial wellness, employment, housing counseling, English language literacy and social adjustment.
  • Provide resource sharing and skill building supports, including around employment, housing, education, cultural orientation, transportation and social services.
  • Assist in securing employment and vocational opportunities.
  • Collaborate with local employment programs, vocational programs, English language programs, financial wellness programs and social service providers, so when appropriate, referrals can be made to ensure comprehensive required service deliveries to Afghan community members.
  • Ensure language and cultural competency in support of program.
  • Participate in trainings to gain competencies in financial wellness education.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years experience in social work, counseling, or related fields preferred.
  • Previous experience with refugee resettlement and/or humanitarian parole processes.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Bilingual or Multilingual: (Pashto and/or Dari) communication skills are required.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively via oral and written means.
  • Proficient in basic math skills, as required to assist clients in their financial wellness activities and classes.
  • Ability to present a positive demeanor to individuals, their families, staff, supportive services personnel, and the general public.
  • Ability to travel between various local working locations.
  • History of community engagement and community organizing.
  • Ability to remain calm during difficult circumstances and emergencies.
  • Advanced knowledge of social adjustment services.
  • Proficient in utilizing Outlook, Word, Teams, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast paced environment.
  • Must pass pre-employment requirements of Cherokee Federal.
