About The Position

The Peer Support Specialist is an active member of the team and provides peer support services to individuals in the alcohol and drug dependencies recovery program. This position provides a wide range of clinical and administrative services to community partners, Options’ clients, and people seeking services. Utilizes Feedback Informed Treatment (FIT) in delivery of client services. Options provides on the job training and supervision for FIT.   Functions as a role model to peers; exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills; serve as an advocate, providing information and peer support for individuals in outpatient setting. The Peer Support Specialist performs a wide range of tasks to assist peers of all ages, from adolescents through adults, in regaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery process.  This position works both in the office and in the community.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and a general understanding of the population served. Some post-secondary coursework preferred.
  • Self-identify as an individual in recovery from a substance use disorder who meets the abstinence requirements for recovering staff in substance use disorders treatment and recovery programs
  • Knowledge and skills sufficient for establishing effective relationships with clients who have addictions in order to support them in their own recovery.
  • Must be eligible to become certified as an Addictions Peer Support Specialist on the State registry https://traditionalhealthworkerregistry.oregon.gov/ [https://traditionalhealthworkerregistry.oregon.gov/], and attend required trainings for certification when available.
  • AND
  • Must be eligible to become a Certified Recovery Mentor (CRM) on the MHACBO registry https://www.mhacbo.org/ [https://www.mhacbo.org/]
  • Attend required trainings for certification when available.
  • Candidates must be able to use e-mail, compose documents, save and locate documents electronically, and learn to use our Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
  • Must pass state-required background and DMV checks
  • possess a valid OR driver's license and a satisfactory driving record to transport clients.
  • Candidate must be able to work independently and flexibly, under general supervision.
  • Possess mature attitude and sensitivity to the needs of people who have a chronic mental illness
  • understanding of HIPAA laws regarding confidentiality of privileged information
  • ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • ability to work independently and with staff as agency needs dictate.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification prior to hire preferred.
  • Proficiency in Word and other MS Office applications preferred.
  • Bilingual skills a plus; Options pays a premium for employees who can conduct business in Spanish and provide certification of a language proficiency test approved by the Oregon Health Authority that meets a proficiency level of “High Intermediate”.
