Requirements

  • Self-identify as a present or former recipient of mental health or substance use services OR as a person in recovery from a mental health or substance use disorder
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of a state-approved Peer Specialist training program and, if required, successful completion of a standardized examination
  • Missouri Only – Complete required application and certification processes, including any required 5-Day Basic Training Program and state certification examination within required timeframes
  • Basic knowledge of case management and rehabilitation principles related to mental health and substance use disorder treatment
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain healthy professional boundaries while sharing lived experience
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Current auto insurance
  • Successful completion of background check including criminal record, driving record, abuse/neglect, and fingerprint check
  • First Aid certification within three (3) months of beginning employment and upon renewal date
  • Obtain CPR certification within three (3) months of beginning employment and upon renewal date
  • Complete Behavioral Management training within thirty (30) days of employment or first available class after start date
  • Complete required continuing education of thirty-six (36) hours every two (2) years in accordance with state regulations
  • Complete all required orientation and annual training requirements
  • Ability to connect effectively with individuals experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges
  • Exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and negligible force frequently to lift, carry, push, or move objects
  • Perform repetitive hand, finger, and arm movements for typing and documentation
  • Sit for extended periods with occasional walking or standing
  • Meet ADA considerations for sedentary work as defined by role requirements

Responsibilities

  • Share lived recovery experience to inspire hope, model resilience, and support individuals in achieving personal recovery goals
  • Facilitate individual and group peer support services with a rehabilitation and recovery focus
  • Assist individuals in developing and progressing toward goals outlined in their individualized treatment or recovery plans
  • Help individuals identify strengths, personal resources, and natural supports within their community
  • Connect clients to recovery resources, including mutual aid and community-based support groups
  • Participate in treatment team meetings and staffing to ensure continuity of care
  • Communicate with referral sources and guardians regarding progress and transition planning as appropriate
  • Provide crisis intervention and emotional support as needed
  • Assist with scheduling services, arranging transportation, and coordinating referrals for additional services
  • Document all services in accordance with state regulations and CARF standards
  • Maintain professional representation of the agency and adhere to program philosophy
  • Complete ongoing training and professional development requirements
