About The Position

The position involves providing support and advocacy for individuals with mental health challenges, promoting self-determination, recovery, and self-advocacy. The role focuses on assisting individuals in identifying their strengths, setting wellness goals, and overcoming barriers to recovery. The position requires engagement in outpatient programs, education for staff, and leading recovery support groups, all while maintaining a respectful and compassionate approach towards consumers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be a current or former recipient of mental health services for no less than one year.
  • Ability to identify as a consumer of mental health services and speak openly about personal diagnosis and treatment.
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to attend out-of-town Peer Specialist training for certification.
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of the Alabama public mental health system.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric disorders in the adult population.
  • Knowledge of cultural diversity and behavior management.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention and non-violent crisis intervention practices.
  • Knowledge of Psychiatric Rehabilitation principles and educational methods appropriate for adults with severe psychiatric disorders.

Responsibilities

  • Promoting self-determination, recovery, self-advocacy, and self-direction.
  • Assisting individuals in identifying strengths and wellness goals, setting objectives, and identifying barriers.
  • Attending treatment team meetings to promote the individual's use of self-directed advocacy tools.
  • Assisting individuals in goal planning and learning how to ask for appropriate services in the community.
  • Providing information about benefits such as SSI, SSDI, and Medicaid.
  • Engaging individuals in outpatient programs and services to encourage recovery.
  • Modeling self-advocacy skills and teaching wellness management strategies.
  • Helping individuals develop their own self-management plans/tools.
  • Connecting individuals to community support groups to promote hope and decrease social isolation.
  • Providing education to staff about self-advocacy and peer support roles.
  • Teaching transportation skills and sharing personal stories to model stability.
  • Supporting informed decision-making about treatment, housing, and community connections.
  • Assisting in developing crisis and safety plans.
  • Building social skills in the community to enhance recovery.
  • Assisting in overcoming barriers to recovery and addressing challenges.
  • Helping individuals obtain necessary documentation for benefits, employment, and housing.
  • Leading recovery support groups and NA/AA meetings when appropriate.
  • Seeking supervision and consultation as needed and employing suggestions for improvement.
  • Maintaining confidential files and documentation for individuals receiving services.
  • Treating consumers with care, dignity, and compassion, respecting their privacy and confidentiality.
  • Actively participating in Performance Improvement activities and AltaPointe committees as required.
