About The Position

Be the connection. Be the hope. Be the support. Boone Memorial Health is seeking a compassionate and motivated Peer Recovery Support Specialist to join our Emergency Department team. This role provides non-clinical, peer-based support to individuals at high risk for alcohol or drug dependency, helping them begin and sustain a path toward recovery. As someone with lived recovery experience, you will play a critical role in offering understanding, encouragement, and real-world guidance to patients and families during vulnerable moments. Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with patients, families, and healthcare professionals
  • Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to problem-solve, remain patient, and demonstrate tact in sensitive situations
  • Comfort working with people from all social, economic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Basic computer skills and ability to complete documentation accurately
  • Willingness to learn, grow, and adapt in a healthcare environment
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with physicians, nurses, social workers, and community agencies
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of three years of demonstrated personal recovery and sustained abstinence from alcohol and/or drug use

Responsibilities

  • Provide brief interventions to patients who screen positive for alcohol and/or drug use
  • Engage patients using motivational interviewing and recovery-oriented communication techniques
  • Identify patient history, readiness for change, and need for community support services
  • Work closely with Emergency Department staff and case management to coordinate care
  • Assist patients and families in understanding and accessing community resources
  • Help secure treatment appointments and assist with transportation coordination
  • Serve as a peer support during hospitalization and post-discharge, as appropriate
  • Provide follow-up phone outreach to support continued engagement in recovery services
  • Share coping strategies, self-help techniques, and recovery resources
  • Verify patient follow-through with treatment appointments and conduct follow-up when appointments are missed
  • Complete required documentation, reports, and productivity requirements
  • Participate in required trainings, meetings, and ongoing professional development
  • Act as a recovery resource to clinical team members
  • Demonstrate required competencies within the first 90 days and meet performance expectations
