About The Position

Peer Recovery Specialists focus on provided peer support to patients, building relationships, offering education, and participating as a member of the treatment team. Peer Recovery Specialists provide non-clinical, person-centered, strengths based, wellness focused, and trauma-informed support while helping to ensure the person’s treatment plan reveals the needs and preferences of the person being served to complete their measurable and personalized goals. Peer Recovery Specialists work to help develop relapse prevention planning through provision of group education, participation in treatment team meetings, and check ins.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
  • Must be at minimum a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist
  • If not registered as a peer recovery specialist prior to employment, must have completed DBHDS 72-Hour PRS Training prior to employment
  • If employed prior to becoming a DBHDS – Registered Peer Recovery Specialist (RPRS), required to register within 6 months of employment
  • At 90 days of employment, required to show documentation of efforts towards registration with Department of Health Professions
  • Current BLS certification required within 30 calendar days of hire or transfer into the role and maintained thereafter
  • A peer is defined as a person in recovery from mental illness and/or substance use disorder
  • A minimum of 2 years of recovery is required
  • Peer Recovery Specialists are individuals that use their lived experience to assist others in seeking knowledge and experience of recovery
  • Peer Recovery Specialists must become registered with the Department of Health Professions, Board of Counseling and maintain their credential in good standing throughout employment

Nice To Haves

  • Additional education beyond a high school diploma that demonstrates a special interest in psychology or addiction treatment preferred
  • Training efforts that demonstrate professional interest in ethics and counseling preferred
  • Registered Peer Recovery Specialist (Virginia)
  • 5 years of recovery preferred
