About The Position

Community Medical Services (CMS) is hiring a Peer Recovery Coach. Under the supervision of the Clinic Manager, the Peer Recovery Coach is responsible for providing peer-based recovery support services to individuals with a substance use disorder. Using lived experience, the Peer Recovery Coach builds rapport, establishes trust, and empowers individuals to develop and maintain long-term recovery. This position provides guidance, mentorship, resource navigation, and motivation while upholding ethical boundaries, confidentiality laws, and Michigan Medicaid provider requirements. Requirements

  • Minimum of two continuous years in recovery after the age of 18; three years preferred.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Personal experience receiving treatment for substance use disorder and navigating the recovery system.
  • Must meet MDHHS training and certification eligibility requirements.
  • Completion of CCAR & Ethics training or MDHHS Peer Recovery Coach Certification required (or obtained within agency timeframe).
  • Must pass: Criminal background check Sex Offender Registry check Drug screening within 48 hours of offer
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with reliable insured transportation.
  • Demonstrated ability to form respectful and effective peer-based relationships.
  • Strong communication skills verbally, written, and active listening.
  • Ability to model recovery principles and ethical decision making.
  • Computer literacy includes Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, boundaries, and professionalism.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in varied environments.

Responsibilities

  • Provide non-clinical, peer-to-peer mentoring and recovery support to individuals with substance use disorder.
  • Establish and maintain a professional relationship grounded in lived personal recovery experience.
  • Share recovery stories when appropriate to inspire hope and build connection.
  • Support individuals in developing, implementing, and monitoring their personal recovery plan.
  • Assist individuals with identifying and accessing recovery resources (community agencies, self-help groups, treatment providers, social support, and life skills programs).
  • Reduce barriers and connect individuals with services necessary for sustaining recovery.
  • Attend scheduled meetings, case reviews, team huddles, and community events relevant to coaching.
  • Document services accurately and on time in accordance with agency and Medicaid standards.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality in alignment with HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 regulations.
  • Model recovery-oriented behavior, healthy boundaries, professionalism, and respect for all pathways of recovery.
  • Maintain knowledge of substance use disorder treatment, harm reduction strategies, and peer recovery best practices.
  • Promote a culture of inclusivity, respect, and person-centered support.
  • Represent the organization in a positive, professional manner at all times.
