About The Position

Are you passionate about supporting your fellow students and making a meaningful impact on campus? As a peer mentor in TRIO Student Support Services, you will play a key role in helping first-generation, limited-income students, and students with disabilities overcome challenges and achieve their goals. This position is an opportunity to guide, support, and uplift your peers as they navigate college life. A student assistant will carry out administrative and technical tasks requested by a supervisor. Depending on the area the student assistant is employed in, they may assist and mentor other students or provide support throughout the campus in various forms.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours at Wichita State University.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Enrolled as a sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student at Wichita State University.
  • Has a cumulative 3.0 GPA or better.

  • Trained in or has experience with the techniques and goals of mentoring relationships.
  • Good communication skills and ability to establish positive relationships.
  • A demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of first-generation, limited-income, and students of disability status.
  • A strong commitment to the project's mission of serving disadvantaged students.

Responsibilities

  • Attending all peer mentoring training sessions at the beginning of each semester.
  • Checking and responding to your email on a regular basis.
  • Providing weekly mentoring to students assigned to you.
  • Assisting in the development of positive study habits, study skills, and life skills of mentored students.
  • Providing regular feedback to the Learning Skills Coordinator/Academic Advisor on your student's mentoring progress.
  • Completing and submitting your assessments and time sheets electronically by the due date as required. (If you do not submit any assessments required and/or do not submit your hours worked in a timely manner, there is no guarantee that you will be paid retroactively).
  • Continuously improving the quality of the mentoring process.
  • Actively participating in related activities of the peer mentoring component to achieve the objectives and goals of Student Support Services.
