About The Position

Requirements

  • Certification as a Peer Specialist (NYCPS) or Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA) or equivalent certification from recognized boards.
  • Completion of a formalized Peer Advocate/Counselor/Specialist Training Program or one year of experience working with consumers in related services.
  • High school diploma or equivalent for certain assignments.
  • One additional year of experience for Level II assignments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with people with mental illness and/or homelessness.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct services to health consumers in various settings including emergency, inpatient, outpatient, home, and specialized settings.
  • Collaborate with staff, consumers, and other caregivers in planning and implementing treatment plans.
  • Empower peers to advocate for themselves and resolve issues or problems.
  • Assist consumers with activities of daily living such as budgeting, shopping, and socializing.
  • Lead or co-lead groups on topics like dual diagnoses, relapse, recovery, and socialization.
  • Help consumers identify their own warning signs of relapse and develop coping strategies.
  • Provide supportive peer counseling regarding mental health, substance abuse, and rehabilitation strategies.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary treatment teams to implement comprehensive care plans.
  • Assist consumers with referrals for treatment, rehabilitation, and supportive services.
  • Facilitate peer support networks and social support systems.
  • Maintain documentation in consumer records and prepare required forms.
