About The Position

The Peer Counselor position at NYC Health + Hospitals is designed to support and advocate for consumers during the assessment of a crisis situation. The role is part of the Mobile Crisis Program, focusing on engaging consumers, motivating them to set health and well-being goals, and promoting wellness and recovery. The counselor will utilize their personal experience as a mental health consumer to provide hope and model recovery for others. Responsibilities include gathering information from consumers, collaborating with treatment team members, and documenting in accordance with program requirements.

Requirements

• Satisfactory and documented completion of a formalized Peer Counselor/Specialist Training Program.
• Certification as a Peer Specialist (NYCPS) issued by the Peer Specialist Certification Board.
• A High school diploma or its educational equivalent.
• One (1) year of full-time satisfactory experience working with consumers of mental health services as a peer counselor/specialist, peer advocate, or in related human services.

Responsibilities

• Uses personal experience as a mental health consumer to role model recovery and provide hope for other consumers.
• Engages consumers and helps motivate them to set goals for their health and well-being.
• Assists consumers in seeking clarification about the treatment and recovery process.
• Promotes wellness and recovery by helping consumers identify their strengths and goals in individual or group settings.
• Gathers information from consumers and helps plan the next level of care.
• Collaborates with treatment team members to provide advocacy, referral, and linkage for consumers seeking community resources and benefits.
• Documents in accordance with program and department of social work requirements.
• Participates in assigned supervision.
