About The Position

The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Emory University Department of Pediatrics invites interested applicants for a faculty position (open rank) in the Section of Psychology within the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center is a national leader among childhood cancer, hematology, and bone marrow transplant programs. Aflac Psychology is a valued Section of the Center with 12 faculty psychologists and neuropsychologists, two psychometrists, up to three postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students who engage in patient care and clinical research in the areas of pediatric, adolescent, and young adult hematology, oncology, and bone marrow transplant. The hired Pediatric Psychologist will join one of the strongest pediatric hematology/oncology programs in the country. Our oncology program cares for more than 500 new cancer cases per year. We represent the pediatric arm of Emory’s NCI-designated Winship Cancer Center. We have the largest pediatric hematology program in the country (including 2000 active patients with sickle cell disease) and one of the four largest pediatric oncology programs in the country. Our blood and marrow transplantation program performs an average of 80 transplants annually. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta—the only tertiary pediatric center in the dynamic metropolitan Atlanta area and in the state of Georgia—serves a population of nearly 6 million people, providing a strong basis for clinical programs in rare disorders.

Requirements

  • PhD/PsyD from an APA/CPA-accredited program in Clinical, Counseling, or School Psychology
  • Completion of an APA/CPA-accredited internship
  • Completion of a postdoctoral fellowship with specific focus in pediatric psychology
  • Currently licensed as a psychologist or license eligible to practice in Georgia
  • Eligible to obtain board certification within seven years of being hired
  • Four years of experience in direct assessment and care of pediatric patients in an inpatient and/or outpatient setting
  • Experience in conducting clinical supervision

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in providing family therapy/counseling
  • Experience in writing and research
  • Preference will be given to candidates with related pediatric hematology/oncology experience and/or board certification (ABPP)

Responsibilities

  • Provides effective delivery of services (e.g., psychological assessments, consultation, and therapy) appropriate to the patient’s specific needs and severity level of disability or impairment.
  • Integrates infection control and body substance precautions, patient safety, body mechanics, and knowledge of growth and development, including referral to outside agencies as appropriate.
  • Provides appropriate assessment and treatment, including modifications for special population(s).
  • Develops and successfully implements assessment standards and treatment plans that support established goals.
  • Documents weekly/monthly treatment notes and assessment reports following established standards.
  • Completes discharge and follows up according to departmental standards, including liaison services to patient’s local school systems to assist with school re-entry and consultation for individual education program development as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates and practices family-centered care.
  • Maintains a therapeutic relationship with patient and family.
  • Communicates relevant information at the patient/family level of understanding.
  • Identifies patient/family need for services from ancillary departments and provides follow-up and referral as necessary.
  • Includes family/caregiver participation in all phases of the patient’s program.
  • Evaluates patient and family psychosocial needs and provides appropriate direction to the team to meet these needs.
  • Maintains an emphasis on minimizing duplication and increasing efficiency.
  • Demonstrates commitment to continuous professional growth and improvement, meeting required continuing education standards.
  • Provides clinical supervision to fellows, interns, psychometrists, students, and other employees as assigned.
  • Supports and participates in continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of care and services provided.
