This opportunity is for an Imaging Pediatric Nurse who will function with demonstrated expertise in providing nursing care and/or consultation to pediatric patients hospital-wide, specifically those cared for in the imaging department. The nurse will serve as a recognized resource for consultation to nursing and physician services within Children's Wisconsin and the community, utilizing the nursing process to assess patients prior to procedures or scans, prioritizing and providing nursing care to patients undergoing procedures or exams within the Imaging Department, all while adhering to professional and hospital standards. Children's Wisconsin is the region's only independent healthcare system dedicated solely to children, providing a wide range of care from routine to life-saving treatments, in partnership with The Medical College of Wisconsin.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with an ADN or a BSN (or equivalent academic and/or professional experience).
  • 1+ years nursing experience in critical care/emergency room and/or pediatric sedation OR 3+ years of general pediatric nursing experience.
  • Knowledge of the principles of neonatal, pediatric and adolescent growth and development and child/family responses to fear, illness, injury and hospitalization.
  • Analytical skills necessary to assess complex patient conditions effectively and to develop comprehensive plans of care.
  • Ability to synthesize multiple sources of information to assist in the resolution of human responses to complex problems.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with interdisciplinary health team members and consumers.
  • Ability to represent the organization and serve consumers in a professional manner and promote a positive image of the organization and its services.
  • Mental and sensory abilities to read, process and interpret clinical data.
  • Ability to have flexible hours and be on-call for Interventional Radiology or MRI to meet patient care needs.
  • Ability to operate, interpret and trouble-shoot a wide variety of patient care equipment.
  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council required.
  • PALS-Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council within 90 Days required.
  • License RN-Registered Nurse (30) - State of Wisconsin OR License RN-Registered Nurse (FL Compact) - State of Florida.

Responsibilities

  • Function with demonstrated expertise in providing nursing care and/or consultation to the pediatric patients hospital-wide, who are cared for in the imaging department.
  • Serve as a recognized resource for consultation to nursing and physician services both within CHW and the community.
  • Utilize the nursing process to assess patients prior to procedures or scans.
  • Prioritize the need for and provide nursing care to patients undergoing procedures or exam within the Imaging Department.
  • Function within professional and hospital standards.
  • Utilize a developmental approach to meet the individual needs of the neonatal, infant, toddler, pre-school, school-age, adolescent and young adult patient.
  • Use critical thinking and nursing skills in caring for patients and families.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate a plan of care that is collaborative and addresses the needs of the patient and family resulting in optimal patient outcomes.
  • Respond to the uniqueness of patients and families by providing and coordinating care that meets those needs.
  • Create a compassionate therapeutic environment to promote comfort and prevent suffering.

  • Work in partnership with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team to achieve optimal and realistic outcomes for the best interest of the patient/family.
  • Evaluate what nursing care tasks can be appropriately delegated given Wisconsin statutes scope of practice for the registered nurse as well as established competencies for the technical staff that will complete the task.
  • Coordinate care in conjunction with other care givers, physicians and other disciplines.
  • Act as a resource/advocate to others for specific patients/families.
  • Support the mission and strategic initiatives of the hospital.
  • Demonstrate awareness of the holistic interrelationships that exist within and across health care systems.
  • Identify and work toward the accomplishment of personal, unit/area and division of nursing goals.
  • Work with leaders to identify possible areas for operational and capital budgeting considerations.
  • Provide nursing care to patients undergoing exams or scans within the Imaging department.
  • Coordinate patient care and assist in providing seamless patient care before, during and after exams and procedures, including, but not limited to, those requiring procedural sedation and having the potential to be high risk.
  • Assess and respond to patient’s needs including: appropriateness of procedure, sedation or treatment modalities.
  • Make recommendations for procedural changes.
  • Assess and respond to patient needs before, during and after procedures or treatments.
  • Administer procedural sedation by assessing and administering prescribed medications, monitoring patient closely and initiating rescue medication per sedation policy guidelines.
  • Identify needs and coordinate activities to resolve issues and improve care of the imaging patient.
  • Act as a patient/family advocate and promote a family-centered care.
  • Provide education to parents/guardians regarding sedation, including: risks, benefits and common side-effects.
  • Provide formal teaching of discharge education post-sedation and post-procedure.
  • Assist in setting expected standards of performance within the Imaging Department.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of orientation and on-going staff development needs.
  • Coordinate and deliver complex care utilizing a multidisciplinary approach.
